Let's see....couple the very reasonable expectation on Hertz's part that renters will drive the dog**** out of the car with the novelty value and the limited number available...and you're surprised? What would you charge your horsepower-obsessed brother in law for 24 hours of unsupervised fun in your SRT8? And he's...sort of...family. Hertz rents to total strangers.
Considering that the original 1966 cars were often taken right to SCCA road races and local dragstrips, I'd say Hertz learned its lesson.
Drive It Like A Rental Car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm definitely taking your advice Dan. It sure would be a lot more fun if I could figure out which fuse to pull. Even with the TCS engaged, it's a pretty fun ride -- the coolest rental car I've ever driven. It has a "Ford Racing" intake, strut tower brace, low restriction exhaust, and a very stiff suspension. It handles very well in the twisties. The brakes are not as good as I would expect in a car with this one's power and suspension setup. Other than that and the inability to turn off the TCS, it has been pretty entertaining. I just wanted to be able to return it with the appropriate amount of wear on the rear Pirelli P-Zeroes .

Small world. As the Hertz shuttle pulled into the Boston lot there were two Shelby 'stangs there.
All of a sudden my Toyota Camry was looking even more uninviting so I checked in the office and for an exrtra 41 washers a day -to a total of $100 perday- the car is mine for 48 hours.
Definitely not as quick as my Magnum SRT8 but definitely amusing for a rental. And let's not forget, all rental cars are the quickest cars.
BTW I normally live over on the LX Forum SRT8 and found this thread by googling 'HERTZ SHELBY MUSTANG TCS DISABLE'. It was the first thing I did when I got my laptop powered up at the hotel. So I guess no one has a fuse pull for this yet? Still, great minds think alike.

Yes. I met a guy by the name of Caleb Garret at Hertz. I've no idea who this guy is but turns out he does some racing and presenting on TV etc. It seemed like his manager was getting a normal car when he says that they should get one of the Shelby's. Had a chat with him while I was being shown over the Shelby and I think his manager was going to haggle a deal for the 'stang too. Caleb seems like a really nice guy too and offered me tickets to the event. Unfortunately I don't think I've got time to go.
I will assume each and every one of them will have the **** beaten out of them.
They will be tamed - broken-in horses for sure.
That's for sure. This one already sounded like a tin off loose nails after 4k miles from the chassis perspective. The motor sounds OK though and is a pretty quick revver.
The tranny is a turd with a dog of a shifter. Shifts are smooth but slow and as far as I can tell u can't hold it in fourth. (It's allegedly a five speed auto with shifter positions 123 & D ) Pretty easy to mis-shift too, would need some practice to get it down. Just makes our slap-stick autos look even better.
The best wheel spin you can get seems to be in reverse but I hit the rev limiter pretty quickly of course.
Serious serious understeer and didn't like the balance of the car much.
But at the end of the day, a great racer, oops, I mean rental.
So where's the TCS disable guys and grils? in my dreams I want to find a track tomorrow to hoof round
I can’t imagine that there would be much left after being a rental for a year. Now renting it while new and taking it to the place where there wasn’t much left could be fun.

I can tell you with high confidence that you probably wouldn't want to purchase the unit I spent the past week with. After the second day, the TCS actually quit working. I honestly have no idea why, but the TCS OFF button backlit on it and I figured why mess with a good thing. The car has 55 series rubber on it, so as you can imagine there's not much of that left on the rear of the car I had. It seems like a pretty solid low five second to sixty/low 14 second quarter ride (butt dyno only -- no time to take it to the local drag strip). I did have a couple of run-ins with some of the local talent (Mooresville, NC: "Race City, USA"). It did pretty well against a 350Z with an aftermarket exhaust. I got absolutely owned on I-77 by a '99 Camaro Z-28 from a 65 mph roll. I don't know what that guy had in his car, but it had certainly been modified. As soon as we hit the gas, he just disappeared into the distance. I looked down and was doing over 120, looked up and the guy was gone over the next hill. I backed off pretty quick and never saw him again. One of my client companies actually bought an entire mall for use as one of their corporate headquarters locations. We spent some time after hours in the back parking areas of the place attempting to use the car to write our initials on the pavement in rubber. Got close a couple of times, but I need more practice on this skill set.
On the way back to the airport yesterday, I took it to a spray wash place and cleaned all the rubber dust and brake dust off the wheels and fenders. For those of you who happen to rent one of these things, be careful with the stick-on racing stripes on the sides of the car. They like to come off under high-pressure wash. When I returned it to Hertz, the manager came out and looked it over, handed me my receipt, and drove it around back. I guess they expect people to beat the hell out these things -- as long as you don't bend it, they are probably just relieved to get it back in one piece. The manager did look under the hood to make sure I hadn't removed any of the Hurst Shelby components (strut tower brace, Ford Racing intake, exhaust, engine, etc.), other than that it was no different than turning in any other car I've rented from Hertz. The police come, the insurance adjuster faints, some of the patrons gasp in horror -- the normal stuff. So, like Dan suggested, I drove it like a rental car. It's definitely a ton more fun than the Korean limos I normally get! If you can get one with your #1 Gold points, do it. It's definitely no SRT-8, but it ain't bad for a rental car.

C&D drove the car to a 13.6 in the 1/4...and they are notorious for being ****ty drivers. Hell, they barely pulled a 12 out of the GT500.
Either way, it's not "that" much slower than most Mags.
