I know what you’re saying. I was pretty shocked myself. Mine appears to only do this when temps really get boiling and only intermittent at best. It took them quite a bit of driving in order to get it to reproduce the sound. So they’ve documented it and if blows up they can buy me a new one.

What's been described happened to mine as well. I pulled a broken 20" piece of (what the dealer described as) assembly molding from in front of the fan shroud, I've had no problems since.

I see I am not a alone...20" piece of assembly molding? Was it intermittent? The sound is very alarming, not to mention embarassing on a new car.

I cant believe they are saying this is the "nature of the beast". No car should make that sound. Recreating it for the dealer is going to be tough. I take mine in tomorrow morning...

The sound was intermittent, it usually happened during elevated outside temperatures.

Hers did the same thing today for the first time.

Outside temp and humidity was much higher than normal because of Chris storm proximity.

Just dropped the beast off at the dealer. The Service Manager said he had another car with the same issue last week. I will let you all know this afternoon...

VERY interested to hear what they say. I am out of town right now (without either SRT, dang it) and I was just ill when I left knowing how TERRIBLE that noise is. There is absolutely no way on this planet that it is a "normal" noise. It sounds like someone shaking rocks in a hard-plastic garbage can next to a megaphone. Even other SRT owners are shocked when they hear it on my new car. Here is what I posted over a week ago:

Well, heard it again and this time have a better idea of what mine could be: It seems to only come on when the auxillary cooling fans kick in - and not all the time. When my sons and I listened more closely it sounds like there is a loose screw or rock in the housing getting whacked around by the fan blades. No idea if this is a partially sealed unit or even how to get to it, but that seems to be the most logical. Figure whatever is getting kicked up only manages to get sucked into the "slipstream" every once in a while. Sure sounds terrible when it does!

Anybody have an idea how easy it is to get to them? Looked pretty time-consuming from my brief peek under the hood in a crowded parking lot...

Sorry I was lagging....

So, as I said, I took it into the dealer for the interior/exterior treatment, and while there spoke the the Svc Mgr about the sound. He told me he has a technician who loves to noodle on the SRT's and he would make sure he looked at it....

When I returned I was told that they did indeed see "witness" marks on the fan blade. He said the guy spent 3 hours trying to replicate it....AC on in the bay, running it in the sun, and apparently they can control the fans with a computer to make it stay running...after all of that he was not able to replicate the sound and the only evidence seems to be the markings left behind. He said that the current thinking is that something was inside the shroud and now it is gone.

The Svc Mgr told me to put him on speed dial and let him know the minute it happens again...this guy is great, he went to bat for me with DCX on my Jeep a few months back when they did not want to replace my exhause manifold.

So, the net of it is I will keep watch and return the car when and if it happens again. I hope it was just part of the "break-in"...or perhaps there was foreign object that caused it.

One thing I will say though...i was really disappointed with whatever they treated my interior with...the car was slathered and the new car smell was replaced by a chemical smell....not bad, but not the new car smell. Though today i noticed it had tamed a bit. The exterior seems as smooth as glass...they gave me some speil about molecular bonding, etc...can anyone tell me what the heck it is? Is it a gimmick, or will it truly protect? The cool thing is that they will repaint my car if it turns out they are unable to get it up to restore the paint.

I have an appt to have my windows tinted today...cant wait!!! I will post some pics this weekend.

I wonder how hard it is to get to the fan housing? I hate to take it to an unknown dealer (bought it in Texas) to have them dismantle the thing to find a rock or something simple. And while I feel your (hopefully previous) pain, I am glad it wasn't me just hearing things!
