COOLING FAN sounds like it is crunching rocks!!! HELP.

Guys, i did a search, seems to me i remember someone commenting on a similar issue.

I had just had my car washed and was in the process of vacuuming it out when i heard the most awful and scary noise from under the hood - it sounded like the fan was chewing up the fan housing.

It was clearly one of the fans. The Temp gauge indicated over 200 degrees, well within normal. I turned off the AC and it stopped almost immediately. Then I was on the phone and parked in my driveway for about 20 minutes and it happened AGAIN! Shut off the AC and it stopped.

What gives? Should I take it down to the dealer right away? Has anyone else experienced this issue? Any insight would be appreciated.
BTW, it is about 92 degrees outside. And I usually have the AC running all the time.

Regards,
SRTHILL

Just found a thread that references the same thing..."a clacking noise" is a good way to describe it.

Had anyone found the cause of this issues?

Here is the thread I was referring to
...last post.

If it sounds that bad I would take it in immediately. You don't want to get caught in that heat with a dead fan. It wouldn't take long to exceed 250F while idling.

Yes, that would not be good. And, it is definitely NOT normal. I am actually taking it in to have my interior/exterior protection applied on Thursday and will raise this issue at the same time. I hope it is not one of those phantom things that require multiple visits to the dealer...

I will report back on the root cause. In the meantime, has anyone else experienced this same noise?

SRTHILL

SRTHILL,
I had the same issue.
it is the fan and honestly it is harmless per my service writer...
it sounds HORRIFIC though doesn't it?
the first time it happened to me was at a M&G last year in late July or early August...
I think I had the car like a month...
it was the 2nd fan - for the A/C that was the problem...
I just did not use the A/C...
which lasted oh...
a couple of days...

ok here is the official word on what it was...
I just called my service guy...
"the fan was "rubbing" against the fan shroud housing..."
hope that helps!
Sincerely,
Chris Butler

Thanks a lot Chris! That is exactly what it sounds like. Perhaps there is some expansion due to the heat, which may explain why it is intermittent. In my experience, anytime you can narrow it down for the service guys...so much the better.

I will point them in that direction and post back. In the meantime, I will keep a close eye, er I mean ear to the problem.

Regards,
SRTHILL

Mine is doing the same thing as we speak. Took it to the dealer and service said it was the nature of the beast. I also think it is due to extra heat as my car’s temp gauge was 105 today!! Which for south Florida is way, way too over the top….storms a brewing!

"Nature of the best?" You gotta be kidding me! If it didn't make that sound on day 1, I sure wouldn't accept it doing that at a later time. The sound of "crunching rocks" would turn a lot of heads and they wouldn't be saying "whoa, check out that awesome SRT8." More like, "what the hell did that guy hit or run over?"
