Thumbs down How much is the Gas Guzzler tax going to be?

Has anyone heard? From what info I have gathered, my guess is $2200-$2700. Depending on what it costs can make a big difference in affordability/willing to pay that premium, for it.

$0.00.
When I print up the invoice to a Viper, the gas guzzler tax is included ($3,000). When I print up the invoice to my SRT-8, no gas guzzler tax.
This late in the game, if there were going to be a tax, it would be on the invoice.
Thats my theory.

It is my understanding that the Gas Guzzler tax is built into the invoice. I have yet to get a dealership to confirm this though.

The SRT-8 published combined mpg is 18.4.
http://home.comcast.net/~300_C/p20.htm

Based on this table, the tax would be $2,600.
http://216.239.63.104/search?q=cache...zler+tax&hl=en

GAS GUZZLER TAX
Unadjusted MPG(combined)* Tax
at least 22.5 No tax
at least 21.5, but less than 22.5 $1000
at least 20.5, but less than 21.5 $1300
at least 19.5, but less than 20.5 $1700
at least 18.5, but less than 19.5 $2100
at least 17.5, but less than 18.5 $2600
at least 16.5, but less than 17.5 $3000
at least 15.5, but less than 16.5 $3700
at least 14.5, but less than 15.5 $4500
at least 13.5, but less than 14.5 $5400
at least 12.5, but less than 13.5 $6400
less than 12.5 $7700

Apparently the Gas Guzzler Tax paid by the manufacturer will be disclosed on the automobile's fuel economy label (the window sticker on new cars).

I think you have to pay the gas guzzler tax just like any other tax.
On this Pontiac website, the gas guzzler tax is extra.
http://www.pontiac.com/currentoffers...n=we&brand=gto

Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price. Tax, title, license, dealer fees, $1,000 gas guzzler tax and optional equipment are extra. Gas guzzler tax is required only with automatic transmission.

Joey, that's interesting. From what I have seen, the GTO gets much better mileage thatn the SRT-8 will, so I am surprised it is bad enough to get hit with the tax. As I have seen on another posting, I wonder why the GM's get so much better mileage than the DC's?

According to the EPA, the SRT-8 is not subject to the gas guzzler tax. This is likely because fuel economy is calculated by "model type" (i.e., all 300s) not by individual car. Check the EPA website below:

I am no expert, just googling around trying to figure it out.

I don't know how the government does the calculation, but the 21/28mpg on the government website is for the 2.7 liter engine. Not an average of all 300's. The 3.5's mileage is 19/27, and the hemi 17/25.
Maybe the government's website hasn't been updated, or are not the numbers used to calculate the tax. Or as you said, maybe the government is lenient and excepts the best numbers for a model/class type.

I just hope we get an answer sooner rather than later. There isn't one good reason why it should take this long. Makes ya wonder.................

I wish this were true, but believe it is not. In the link Joey posted, it states that the gas guzzler tax on the GTO is only applicable to the automatic transmissions. If it were as you posted, then either none, or all of the GTO's would be subject to it.

Hey guys, I'm new here and have been watching the SRT-8 progress.
While I'm no authority in the area of "Gas Guzzler Tax", I think it has to do with the timing of the model year. I have been shopping for a 4-Door Performance Sedan; either 300C or CTS-V. The big "stink" with the 2005 CTS-V was the added Guzzler tax, whereas the 2004 CTS-V did not have one. It was explained that the 2004 was not taxed as it was initial model year, so the 2005 was the second model year and got taxed. Maybe the 2005 SRT-8s will get waived, but the 2006 SRT-8s will get hit with the tax?
