Lake Effect in NE Ohio

First real snow fall of the season. Left the house plenty early before the
snow machine turned on. Currently running F1's but have Blizzak DM-Z3
snows on Borbet Type TS Bright Silver wheels sitting in by office garage.

Before an early afternoon meeting I decide to put on the snows since we
already had 4" on the ground and the snow was coming down quite hard.
Got right rear on quickly, proceeded to the front right. Un-bolted the wheel
but could not pull the wheel off the hub without pulling the car off the floor
jack. Great..... proceeded to the left rear and changed that quickly thinking
at least I would have the rears on.. When to my meeting with mis-matched
tires F1's on the front and Blizzak's on the rear. Was surprised to see the
F1's able to steer so well in the road snow and mixed slush. Stopped at the
closest Big Box and picked up some Liquid Wrench and spray grease. Pulled
car in office garage and hit both front wheels at the hub. After clearing the
parking lot and walks, proceeded to change the fronts. Easy work with the
wheel pulling right off this time.

Couple of observations. First off I learned to drive in my home town of
Buffalo NY. Big rear wheel drive cars with bias-belted tires. Need I say
any more. Last car was a 5 series sport, so I ran winter tires on that car too.

The Blizzaks are taller than the F1's. Good thing to have in the winter since
the front clearance is so low. Nice feel driving home on the snow covered
hilly roads. The softer tires absorb the road imperfections, and there are
plenty of them in NE Ohio. Braking was quite good, in fact felt better than
when the F1's were on. I may have to experience a bit more seat time
before I stand behind that statement.

Hey Mr Happy: Have you bought your snows yet? You can see what a
Black SRT8 looks like and drives like on the Blizzak's and Borbets. Email me.

PS The blizzak's are directional so watch what you are doing when you start
to mount the tires. Also the Borbets need a tool to remove the lug nut
cover and I paniced at the first wheel and opened all the wrapped wheels
from Tire Rack and of course the last wheel/tire combo had the magic
card board box taped inside with the tool and new lugs. Also, you can
NOT install the lug nuts on the Borbets with a typical 'X' tire iron. The
sockets on the 'X' lug wrench are too wide (thick) and do not fit in the
narrow cast of the wheel to reach the lug nut. You will have to use a
typical socket and torque wrench to install the nuts.

Lake effect snow storms…..there’s nothing like them! Lived in northwestern Indiana and got those storms from Lake Michigan quite often during the winter. Those were the days…gone but not forgotten. Sounds like you’ve got yourself some nice rubber to run on that crap up there…so good luck!

Are you using the 18x8.5" winter package TireRack sells? The Magnum goes in the car hauler next week for its trip to Syracuse, New York(moving there). I have been trying to locate a winter tire package for it in case I need to get out in some snow.

I was born and raised in Buffalo NY. Learned to drive big rear wheel drive cars on bias-belted tires and then radials. No traction control, stability control, anti-lock brakes, or any assistance of any kind. My car came with the F1's and they are definately a 3 season tire. I like the security of having every advantage I can get on those tiny patches of rubber that support and meet the ground.

LE in Buffalo

I have just one question concerning the Tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) on the OEM wheels. If I where to replace the OE wheels/tires with snow tires and aftermarket alloy wheels (Tire racks recommended tire/wheel package) do have to purchase another TPMS for the aftermarket wheels? Do I have recalibrate the new sensors for the snow tire pressure?

Yes you will need new TPMS and no you don't need to recalibrate them they will synchronize on there own..
