OK guys... a little help here. My neighbor (2 houses down) just came home with a new 06 GTO. Everytime I see him he is talking **** about how his "goat" can whip the SRT8's ass. I am constantly asking him to put up or shut up. It looks like we are finnaly going to go to some of the country roads this weekend before xmas. All I have is the Mopar CAI done to mine and his is new about 300 miles on it, auto, completely stock. Can i beat this guy???
Yup, let the car do the shifting, ESP off from a dead stop. If you run him at a speed have it in the correct gear already. Letting the trans shift down takes a few tenths and that's all it takes to lose.
With some quick research the numbers suggest..
GTO, 6L V8 with 400hp
SRT-8, 6.1L V8 with 425hp
So on numbers alone you do have the advantage yet the GTO only weighs 3725 pounds and the SRT-8 comes in at 4160. This is probably your bigggest disadvantage and the thing you can do least about. I would say it would be extremely close, from memory and please correct me if im wrong but Australia makes the Monaro which looks strikingly similar and has the same engine and then sends them off to the US to be re-baged as the GTO. I may have this the wrong way around so please correct me?
Either way just a few days a go, a bloke said that from a standstill he blew away a Holden Clubsport by 5-6 carlengths from the lights to around 130mph. The clubsport is a very similar car to the GTO and puts around 412hp to the rears.
Either way as stated before i think it would be very close and it will depend more on driver skill then the cars themselves.
Please keep this post updated as ide really like to see the result.
I've also heard that the GTO has a touchy clutch/tranny. If you're neighbor's is fairly new he might miss a shift when moving quickly through the gears. This happened to a guy at the local track a few weeks ago. He called out a FF2MOE's SRT8 Magnum not once, but twice and both times he missed the 1-2 shift and got beat by at least a full length.

I took a look at the SRT8 Charger forum. They have a lot of threads on this subject. It seems some the SRT8 Charger wins and some the GTO wins. I guess it depends on the mods. Stock versus Stoc...This should be good. Can you get someone to video tape this????
