well, it had to happen. My neighbor across the street is a big motorhead, and his boss always comes by in his spanking red GTO. This is a cherry example of a frame off resto on a 67 car, updated to a TH400 trans with a mildly built 400 engine. His mods are torque converter, fresh factory type motor with a mild cam, headers, noisy duals, and 4:10 gears.
My neighbor was talking about my car, ran on a little long about it and his boss threw down the gauntlet! Figured there was no way I was going to outrun him. Even bragged about his engine builder to me, and I grew up racing old Ponchos, there's not too many that could surprise me.
So it's on, we head out to the old road in the boonies where there are no cars at all. Just 3/4 mile of straight road with nothing! I've got my neighbor in the car with me and his boss is all alone. We set up, my neighbor counts us down, he leaves EARLY, and we roar by him like he missed a gear!
So we do it again, he hooks it up a little, but before 60 I am going past him like he's moving backwards. Now he wants to run from a roll. I'm getting a little heat soak now, so he does a little better still, but it's not really a race at all. Dusted him 3 times, now he's on with the excuses. He declares me a liar, my car is definitely not stock, has programming, an exhaust, etc. He's also not running sharp, needs new plugs, got some carb issues...! This from a guy who was gonna dust me bad about 20 minutes ago!
I politely insist on my originality, only thing in/on my car is a new K&N drop in and new tires (killer hole shot now!). Then I offer to run him for top end from a fast roll, say 80, he declines saying his car is better off the line! Well, I can never beat him in his head, only on the street!
Another old Icon gets beat down by new tech!

Congratulations Steve on the “curry goat” for dinner. Don’t you just love the excuses! Too funny. Obviously in denial and can’t accept the reality that a four door family sedan cleaned his clock. Well done and way to represent!

Great write-up! I love it. Sounds like he is still scratching his head from your run, lol.
I ran a Camaro that was built pretty good and walked it bad. The driver acted just like the one you had...
he knows now that he must bring it, and his buddy said he will!

For those of us old goats (hee, hee, hee) who grew up during the era of the great muscle cars it's nothing short of amazing how badly the SRT-8s will beat the street icons of the past. I'm too lazy to look for it now, but somewhere I posted a comparison of 0-6- and 1/4 mile times for the 60s and 70s cars, we'll kill 'em! (Found the link in one of JMatt's posts: Quarter Mile, 1/4 mile, car performance comparison) Great story, Steve!

Saw a 1969 GTO at a dyno day once. It had a 455 with a giant cam. It made 480 torque at the wheels but only made 280 hp. I was suprised it sound so evil. I guess it would be good for burn outs and 0-60 races.
Way to go SteveO. Yea, that is a great kill. Not a lot of members that have gotten to race one of the original series muscle cars, and they got some pop too. Sounds like you ran into a monster, with your monster stick ! Way to go Steve!
