Thx bigsnake, from my 8/2004 thread " Well guys I am presently in the middle of the oil change at 1875 miles, Amsoil 5w20 will be going in momentarily The results of the oil pan bolt magnet are shocking. More metal powder than I expected and one massive chunk which is simply amazing. The photo shows a shard of metal sticking straight up exactly as it came out of the pan. The other photo shows black metal powder wiped from the end of the bolt and the shard compared to a dime for reference. The golden oil is from the threads and spillage on the magnet to contrast the black metal powder vis a vis the oil. This is from filtered oil in the pan. I have not yet removed the filter and will post separately those findings once I cut the filter " The Filtermag shows vertical stripes of metal dust.
edit: cool stealth, anytime. I got the regular, I think the supersize is a stronger magnet but the same size. The regular magnet is plenty powerful. Also, the FM website shows a front and back view giving the impression that you get two magnets, you get one magnet that covers about 120-180 degrees of the filter depending on the filter size.

Always appreciate the way you document and post pics. Thanks for the professionalism.

But that said, no matter where you put a strong magnet in the oil it will collect ferrous metals. It could be anywhere, just so it can be in or directly adjacent to the oil. This doesn't necessarily mean you are removing anything that correct filtration does not, only that your magnet is strong and able to hold onto some particles as they pass by.

Otherwise, they're all in the filter. I think you could make a case for having one in the pan, as you might then protect the oil pump from damage/wear from the particles. But either way it's cool to see them in tangible form.

i've been using the napa 1085 filter. wonder if they make a larger one as well?
No clue but I'll search through purolator filters at pepboys. They have more filter sizes than mobil1.

Thanks for those kind words. Ahh yes, what you say is exactly correct. There is literally 1 small point to make. It's the sub 20 micron particles that pass right through the filter that the Filtermag holds (along with larger particles). Cummins showed the these sub 20 micron particles cause significant wear. In the real world it won't matter for us. Those Diesels made by Cummins will be affected at the 500K to 800K range by these particles, not an issue for us. I still use them anyway, I just move the filter from car to car when I sell.
