I used to use Mobil1 in out C's until I switched to Quantum Blue synthetic oils last fall. They blend 5W20 for the Heritage Edition, and a specialty 12.5W40 for our SRT8 engines.

In love with my first wife and first car ('68 Charger) ... still have the wife, but now there's the Heritage Edition and a Magnum SRT8!

My IH engine does not have a cat, so no worries there. I used it, all was well. Maybe I'll add a drop of E.O.S to my SRT until my supply of Mobil1 0W-40 is gone.
Here is an interesting article which ties in with what you mention about the Porsche engines:
Oils: What oil should I use? Which oil is best for my Porsche or aircooled engine?

LOL - would it surprise you to know that a printout of the website you linked is on the passenger seat of my SRT-8?!? Check out the Zinc and phosphorous levels in the Delvar 1, compared to what USED to be available. Then compare it with the current 0W40.

So am I understanding this correctly? They changed the formula of the 0W40 so it isn’t as good as it once was? Not to be a dunce, but I’ve read so many oil threads in my days it all becomes mush to my brain. Or maybe it just turns my brain to mush.

The current 0W40 in our cars from the factory is PROBABLY the SM version. The SM classification came out November 2004. The first 2005 SRT-8's (not counting pilots) were built in February 2005.

0W40 had low levels of Zinc and Phosphorous to start with, even under the SL classification. They appear to have gone down another 10-15% under the SM classification.

Again - just like running a 200 thermostat instead of 180, or reformulating carnuaba waxes based on VOC content, or changing from freon to whatever we use now, the changes are for emissions purposes.

Even Mobil 1's own answer seems to imply that 5W40 turbo diesel oil is a pretty good choice for performance cars.......

Gottcha! Thanks for the explanation. Is that oil as hard to find as the 0W40 is?

Local O'Reilly Parts store had 18 quarts on hand. I took 11 for the 911 and 7 for the SRT-8. Cleaned 'em out. I believe it's pretty widely and easily available.

$9.95 when purchased in multi-quart quantities. I just received the next gal and a half for the Heritage (have 2 quarts from previous). And this change will be 7500 miles. After a confirming oil analysis, the next step will be 10k miles.

I'll go 5k miles immediately on the first change to QB on the MSRT8, and after another analysis it will go 7500... or possible 10k. So, vs. changing Mobil1 at every 3k... it evens out. And I do believe the technology in this oil is legit.

danno, you ask great questions...

JMatt, you kick ass on good info. I was just reading about this on a dyno page and was going to switch, but I still felt uncomfortable regarding the SRT's. Now I'm switching for sure.
