JMatt,

Thanks for the informative post. My oil technology got lost right around
Castrol R. Great stuff, made from castor beans. Nothing like hearing the sound of a Bugatti at speed with the smell of Castrol R wafting across the track.

Yet Another Oil Change Post
IIRC, 5W is good down to -20*F (check the owner's manual for the exact #).
It's funny how the "'engineers" now say OK to 15W-40 because it solves the whining problem that some owners experience. I wonder, if it was so important that we use 0 or 5W 2 years ago, what are we sacrificing by now using 15W to quiet down the squirters? Probably nothing, but its something to think about.
It's a dynamic world.
I added a 1/2 pint of E.O.S. (as described in my earlier post) to my oil. I'll stock up on 5W-40 diesel next time around.

Yup - sounds like you were on the right track. I didn't pay attention to WHICH 5w-40 you used, but it certainly wouldn't have hurt. I think it's crucial todya to find the SL oils instead of SM - or use the EOS as you did. I don't know if EOS raises the viscosity like STP does.

General Motors Engine Oil Supplement - or E.O.S. for short. The gm part is ENGOILSUP. It's available at gmpartsdirect or at some GM dealers. It's an old school product, but is beginning to find a new generatio nof fans. Basically, it adds the zinc and phosphorous (engine wear fighting compounds) what have been eliminated from the new "SM" formulations of oil, which used to be in the "SL" formulations. It comes in a one pint bottle, and should nicely bring any current oil up to levels seen several years ago.

Thank You Sir. I'll have to get me a few bottles. Do you happen to have a part#?

I tried to get some EOS from a local GM dealer. He said they only sold it in cases. Then he tried to sale me what he said was the equivalent. I did not get the name because I did not want it.

Only some dealers carry it. Keep calling around. The part number is "ENGOILSUP".
