Changing my oil - but (GASP) not with Mobil 1 - 0W40

Changing my oil today.

Not using Mobil 1's 0W40.

I know, I know. Even I have defended using only 0W40 on many, many threads. However, I've seen the light. the 0W40 that is available has some shortcomings.

I'm using Mobil One Turbo Diesel Truck 5W40.

(Yes - I'm serious).

Couldn't get the Amsoil, huh? OK, I'll bite. What's the advantage of the turbo diesel oil?

From the Mobil website (Delvac and Turbod Diesel are the same according to the site):

Question:
Mobil 1 vs. Mobil Delvac 1® for a Gasoline Engine
I have read on the Internet that Mobil Delvac 1 oils may provide better performance in high-performance passenger-car engines than regular Mobil 1, since they meet CF-4 specs. What about using Delvac in gasoline engines, especially high-performance engines?
-- "Tribological", Richmond, VA
Answer:
Mobil 1 formulas will deliver everything you need for your gasoline engine. In fact, during development, tests are run in both gasoline and diesel engines to demonstrate the superior performance of Mobil 1.

Mobil Delvac 1, which is designed for heavy-duty diesels, meets most diesel engine oil specifications, and also meets API SL certification. And because Delvac 1 operates in a different environment – diesel engines run longer, generate soot and run hotter, it contains different types and amounts of additives than Mobil 1. Even so, Delvac 1 still meets API SL certification for gasoline engines, and because of its high performance, we would expect it to do a good job of protecting your gasoline engine.

If you use your gasoline vehicle in "heavy-duty" service, Delvac 1 will provide many benefits compared to conventional oils. When compared to Mobil 1 performance, those benefits may not be as obvious, and in fact, Mobil 1 would be expected to outperform Delvac 1 in many gasoline applications.

preference

personally I prefer some of the diesel additive packages to the gasoline ones. Diesel is generally a heavier "duty cycle", and they really soil their oil quickly.

No harm, no foul.

API SL vs. API SM

API SM came out about November 2004. The "improvement" over API SL was based on emissions at the expense of engine wear. Under new API SM, some crucial engine wear additives are limited to about 2/3rds of what they were in API SL. Camshaft manufacturers were the first ones to notice the adverse effect of API SM on the wear of their products........

Mobil 1 0W40 has begun to lose a lot of fans, and most knowledgeable Porsche owners won't use it anymore.

One of the oils of choice recommended for oil/air cooled 911's is the Turbo Diesel 5W40. The additive levels of that oil (Which in addition to the diesel ratings, is rated SL for use in gasoline engines) are the closest approximation to what was available for our cars even 8 months ago.

Note that I am still using Mobil 1, so this is certainly not a "my brand is better than your brand" debate. It's more of a - "the government picked emissions over performance and I'm picking performance over emissions" comment.

The 15W-50 WAS the oil most Porsche guys were using. The original version was an SL rated oil. In the last 6 months they changed it to SM and it lost half the ingredients designed to reduce/avoid wear.

Hence, the reason to look for something else. The 5W40 is actually closest to what used to be available.

My old IHC Scout engine uses flat tappets, and I became aware of the deficiencies of the newer standards via the Scout forum which I frequent. After rebuilding that engine, I was warned that many folks were wiping their cam lobes because the new oils did not contain enough zinc and phosphorus to provide proper tappet lubrication during the cams break-in period... a very critical time. (Most modern (newer) engines use roller valve tappets, which are not too much of a problem for the cam.) GM's E.O.S supplement was mentioned as a fix. My IH engine does not have a cat, so no worries there. I used it, all was well. Maybe I'll add a drop of E.O.S to my SRT until my supply of Mobil1 0W-40 is gone.
Here is an interesting article which ties in with what you mention about the Porsche engines:
Oils: What oil should I use? Which oil is best for my Porsche or aircooled engine?

I'm currently using Amsoil Euro Formula 5W-40 in my SRT8. So far so good.
