oil changes

as much as i would love to do the oil changes myself on my car, i dont really have the means to at my apartment, but i can do it if really need be. is there anyone here who takes there car to an oil change place, specifying the use of mobil 1 equivalent? that is what i did for my first oil change, but i never was 100% sure that they put in the equivalent. do places let you bring your own oil and ask them to use that instead?

Most dealers will let you bring your own oil in, so I would imagine other places would do the same. Can't hurt to ask, but I'd make sure you were able to watch them.

Over the years I've been to quite a few of the "quickie" lube places, some very good, some not so good. The problem with these places is they are unlikely to have the exact viscosity you need, even if they do have the particular synthetic oil brand you want. Besides that, the filter they put on will be "close", but again may not be the direct replacement filter.

As mentioned above, you are best off supplying the oil and filter and when the shop figures out you are willing to pay for their service, they shouldn't have a problem with it. I don't mind them making their money, I simply want it done right with the right materials.

thats a good point, as long as i am paying them, it shouldnt matter if they are using my oil and filter or their oil and filter.

i want to do the best possible for my car,and short of doing this myself, thats the next best thing.

I take my car(s) to one of two places: The dealership or a quick lube place. I bought my oil (0W-40 Mobil 1) at Walmart today and the Chrysler dealership provided the filter and labor for $18.00 (did that this morning). For some of my other cars I take them to Walmart at their quick lube bays. Buy the oil there (usually a filter elsewhere) and they change it for $8.87. At Walmart the only guy who works on our cars is the manager. New Walmart, no lifts or anything else to screw up.

I always buy my mobil 1 0w-40 fully syn and the mobil 1 performance syn oil filter from kragen. Usualy comes out to about $60 in oil/filter and then I have express lube do the oil change for $20. I only take it to places that have the pit.

I just noticed when i took my 300 in for an oil change that they didnt put on a K&n filter which i specified and they said ok. i just looked there this afternoon and there is a F*@&#@# FRAM oil filter there. So instead of taking it back is there a way to just switch out my filter? i dont like FRAM.

there a local place that my family has been going to for years for repairs and oil changes that has a pit that i trust, and my friend works at another one, but that one has a lift. i think i will just go buy the oil i need from wal mart or something, pick up the filter, and ask them to do it. thanks guys.

Dealer for me. I go every 3-4K miles. I figure if something goes wrong they will be more likely to help me out with future repairs , if I have consistantly gone to them for oil changes. Cost usually around $65.
