Should dealer replace gas they use while vehicle is serviced

Should the dealer replace the gas that they consume while on tech drives or other such drives when they have the cutomers car.

(a) I know the customer is bringing the car in with a specific issue and the tech's do need to make drives in or to recreate certain scenarios. so some gas consumption is under the assumption of the owner of the vehicle.

My question is if I have 1/2 a tank when I come in and barely just over E when I pick up my car. Wouldn't it make good customer service to simply just put some gas in the vehicle so that the 1st the thing the customer has to do is get gas when they had gas coming in. You never have to fill out anything when you drop off your vehicle on how much gas you had when you came in, but I think it would be good customer satisfaction for a dealership to attempt to get the customer back to close to where they were when they dropped it off or within reason.

My question to them would be why they had to use half a tank of gas in the first place. That sounds very excessive to me. My dealer always the mileage when it's brought in so it's easy to see how far they drove it.

I have to agree. You should find out why they used up half a tank of gas!!

I always make a note of the mileage when i drop a car off for service.

I would take this up with the service manager!!!!!!

There should be no reason they need to drive 100+ miles for any diagnostics. It's probably to late but I would check the avg. mpg and see how hard they drove it. If it's down in the 12-14s or lower I'd have some additional issues.

I agree. 1/2 a tank sounds excessive to me. Depends on what you had the car into service for.

I always write the mileage down and note the needles position on the gas gauge, right when I pull up to service bay, to drop the car off.

I had my Super Bee in for a front tire wobble, at 80 mph. They only let one of the techs I know drive the car. But I knew he would have to put 20 miles on the car round trip. He had to get on the freeway and get up to speed to feel the wobble. I checked the odo when I got the car back, he only used 17 miles. I do not feel they owe me the gas to check the problem. But if they burned through a 1/2 tank for no other reason than to joy ride the customers car. I would want that gas replaced and an explanation why the car was used for a 1/2 tanks worth.

agree with all statements, i expect a small amount of gas to be used for diagnosis, but the amount of gas used should be negligible, even in an SRT8. a half tank is ridiculous.

I'd check under my nose pan too if they drove my car that much. Chances are if they're joy riding it they're scraping up and down driveways too. Plus as everyone stated above they're required to write down your milage, it goes in the system before and after. So it should be documented in their system exactly how many miles they drove it. I'd go to the service manager and say I have a concern about how much my car was driven and feel I'd bring it up with you before calling the DCX customer complaint line. That should at least get you a free oil change.
