Air Intake blk box do I need it?????

Please review the pic..
Would like to know the purpose of box on left side of intake and do I need this piece or can i throw a air filter in it place?

I have no such plans, but I, too, would love to know what the $#^% that box is/does.

It's the silencer. I dont know if it can be replaced with a filter.

I was going to try and put a plumber's cap in place of it, but wound up replacing the whole assembly with an after market one. Like Sunrider said, it's a silencer.

actually a resonance chamber but silencer is close enough, as it serves to silence drone from the intake at specific throttle openings.

No benefit to removing it at all as it does not affect performance.

Atleast the SRT silencer is easy to remove. Put an aftermarket CAI on and voila, two mods done at once! On the 5.7 it's under the front bumper fascia area and takes a little time to get out, but it's an easy process. The only performance that would be seen or should I say heard would be that it would cause your aftermarket CAI to be a little louder, atleast on the 5.7 it is.
