Brakes Grooved or Scored?

I am taking the SRT in Monday (posted in service forum) for the irritating squeeling noise at 15k miles and was wondering about the TSB for rotors. I know little to nothing about brakes and want to know how you specifically diagnose this problem. If I have an issue, I would prefer to deal with it now since its already going in for repair. What does 'grooving' or 'scoring' look like? What do I look for?

Also, as a side note, is the dealer going to try and tell me after checking my brakes that they need to order these new pads and will need the car for more than a day? What should I expect from these clowns?

Thanks

When you look at your rotors if you see lines (grooves) in them this isn’t normal. Eric did have some excellent pictures showing the scoring on his rotors, but it seems they’re not working. I’ll put the link below, maybe they’ll work later.

What can you expect from your dealer. Well sadly you have 15k on your ride. They may say they’re not going to cover any of it because it’s past the 12k warranty period for rotors. However, there have been many members, including myself, that found a dealership that would replace them even though they were over in mileage. They very well may have to order parts, but it shouldn’t take weeks or months. This is also NOT an overnight repair. Hope this helps answer your questions. Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

You guys are unbelievably helpful. Bummer about the 12k miles deal, I definitely did not catch that the first time through reading up on all this. That is my bad because I have been living with the squeel and dust/grooving for 5k miles at least. Guess that's what happens when you don't stay up with the 300c forum for about a year, huh!

Oh, well, I will scratch having the dealer do anything and have gearhead brother-in-law with the CTS-V help me get the rotors and brakes installed.

Now, considering I am doing this all on my own dime, what rotors and brakes should I be looking at installing?

Thanks again for all the great info

Thanks pipsmom!

ENSEY - don't give up without trying at least at your dealership. They best way to descirbe the rotor grooving problem is that they should look like the back of a CD, not a record album. I think these are somewhat pricey items and sometimes they will hook you up. As Danno said, some other forum members have been as fortunate. Try to get them to throw in the pads too!

Eric

I agree with Eric. You should try and get them to do the work for you. Some have gone ahead and performed the changes anyway. All they can say is no, or in some cases they’ve offered a big discount as a way to appease the customer. You could ask them for that type of deal to.

Ultimate’s post tells you where you can get the slotted rotors if you end up buying them yourself. Dave Z (user name DZeckhausen) has the Posi-Quiet pads so you can PM for details on those.(highly recommended as being dustless)

Good luck and let us know how it goes with your dealer….maybe he’ll surprise you.
