Smaller/Lighter wheels?

Does anyone run smaller/lighter wheels on their SRTs? I realize we have a massive diameter so I'm not really sure how i could compensate but it seems like to me you could run a much broader range of tires that are both higher performance and cheaper if you were to drop down to 19s for example? Nevermind the fact that the factory 20" wheels are stupid heavy.

Don't get me wrong, the factory 20" SRT wheels are sexy, but coming from the SCCA crowd i'm having a hard time swallowing over 70 lbs for a wheel/tire - That's almost what my 35" wheel/tire weighed on my diesel rig..

I always thought smaller wheels wouldn’t fit over the front brakes.

I'm pretty sure that can't be true... It woudl be one thing if the front rotors were 18" but they aren't - the fronts are just over 14" which would imply that a wheel as small as probably an 18 or even a 17 might fit.. at that size though it would be difficult to get the same diameter tire w/o looking like a 4x4 truck.

Just amazes me that people as enthusiastic about their rides as the SRT crew haven't found a better/lighter/cheaper wheel/tire combo.

I run 18" Borbet Type TS wheels in the winter with my snow tires. But I'm back to the heavy 20" factory wheels, now that the weather has turned nice.

The Borbet wheels have lots of caliper clearance and easily clear the stock SRT8 brakes. They even clear the StopTech 15" 6-piston big brake kit on my SRT8.

I imagine you could get Forgeline or Fikse to build you some much lighter 19" wheels that would improve handling a bit. But I haven't looked into alternative tires that would have the same (or close) circumference as stock.

what tire size do you end up having to run on the 18" winter wheels? like a 255/50? a 265/50 is just about the perfect diameter but definitely not the greatest size for performance... 305/45/18 is decent as is 295/40/19 and 275/45/19....

SS = silver steel, i suppose it probably should read SSM so as to avoid confusion with any other "SS" label.

Hmm, was on the phone with forgeline while I was typing that last message a 19x9 or 19x10 set of the so3p wheels weigh in at 27lbs each (the guy is going to have to verify and get back to me) - which would mean a tire could weigh 40 lbs or less and still come in lighter than our current wheels/tires - anyone know what the weight on the wheels and tires are seperately? 27lbs seems reasonable for a wheel (although still heavy compared to average tuner style wheels) but i am betting the SRT8 wheel is not a whole lot heavier...

Well the Stock SRT8 wheel with the F1s weigh about 57 lbs I think so the wheel weighs 57 - (Whatever the F1s weigh).

I wish Fikse would make a 20" or 22" for our SRT8s with some good designs and I would be all over those. I would maybe like to see those Fikse Profil or the FM/10s in 20" to 22" size on a SRT8.
Smaller wheels for performance but personally I don't think I want to have anything smaller than a 20" for the SRT8, just won't look that great plus I wouldn't of bought this car if I only wanted performance anyways.. hehe.. \\

My cousin bought an EVO VIII and spent only a few thousand and now his car does high 11s easy, and I probably would of gone a similar route if that was the case tho it doesn't hurt to try to improve the performance of these SRT8s.

Even thought about replacing the stock ones with 20"s but no reason to because I already have 20s so might as well go with 22"s but no bigger and getting them as light as I can would be a main concern as well.

Don't forget about the caliper though

While I am sure you could get a 19" wheel on it, how much would you really gain?

Personally, if I'm going to look at modding wheel/tire combos, I'd want to look at rolling the inside of the rear arches and getting wider wheels on the back -- IMO, the SRT is significantly under-shoed at the back.

I weighed my SRT wheels and they were all around 28 pounds. This was on a bathroom scale so could be off a little. Not much different than the wheels you are looking at. I'm not sure that would make a huge difference in performance.
