Just installed my new pads.... Quick question...

Hey guys,
Finally gave in and did the brakes on my car today. Wow! What an EASY job! I kept my rotors because they are still in perfect shape. I just swapped the worn out stock pads with the posi-quiets i ordered. I did the whole job in about 45 mins. I already took the car for a drive and went through the 1st bedding process. I plan to do it again tomorrow just to assure they are good and broke in like they should be especially since the rotors were not changed.

Now, my question is... when i removed the rear pads, they had a thin metal layover thing that was on the back of each pad between the thick metal reinforment attached to the pad and the pistons in the calipers. All it appeared to be to me was additional low pad sensors as they have a sensor looking points sticking out on all 4 corners. Im assuming it was there for the stock pads from the factory for some reason but after looking at it, i figured it was one more thing to worry about vibrating or making noise so i left them out considering the pads already have a hefty low pad sensor built into them. The front brake pads dont have those things anyway.

Now, is there any reason i should have put them back on behind the new pads?

I thought maybe they were used to help hold the pads in place in the calipers but the openings on the pads themselves that the slide pins push through were smaller than the ones on the retainer looking things so that couldnt be it.

Anyway, just wanted to make sure i dont need them. I kept them just incase but the car drove great without them tonight and made no noise at all. I greased the pins a little to assure the pads would slide smoothly back and forth when braking as they looked fairly dry when i took them off. So far so good and im loving the fact that i got rid of that annoying squeal!!!

shims

shims are shims... basically you use them if they stop your issue, usually noise.

If they're not needed why have them?

Oh ok. Well i drove the car around today... no issues! Ill hold onto them incase something changes but i cant see any benefit to having them on there at this time...

If anything, i would think they lose thin metal shim would add to vibration or noise. One less thing to worry about now IMO.

Yeah, you won't need them. I have the Centric C-Tek pads on my car before the Posi Quiets came out and reused them. DaveZ says you don't need them for these pads. You'll soon see trhe huge difference in brake dust reduction!!!

Cool! And i am loving them! Stop just about as good as the stock pads but the brake dust reduction was well worth it!!

Not if they're made of highly heat-conductive metal!

Actually, they 'insulate' from vibration, thus reducing noises.
