Goclaws potential winter solution

Came across this product, go claws, which is a tire chain alternative which are street legal, thereby providing traction in snow.

Has anyone heard of or had experience with these?

http://www.flextrax.com/index.html

Here is an exerpt from their site:

How it works?
The unique patented Flex-Trax, Advanced Traction System is composed of tread faced mud/snow elements, that can be quickly and easily secured to a vehicles drive tires. The product combines proven techniques of mechanical engineering, physics, material handling, and hydraulics to achieve a modular design that gives superior performance compared to mud/snow tires and tire chains.

Previous tire tread designs for adverse conditions have included beefy lug members (knobbies) or protuberances extending outwardly to bite into the mud and mud. In operation, the grooves that form these extensions become filled with fluid solids to the height of the extensions, rendering the footprint profile innefective for traction.

Flex-Trax solves this problem by using the opposite approach. Pascal chambers are utilized, instead of bulky lug member extensions. Pascal, and eighteenth century physicist, was the first to use hydraulic pressure to achieve a mechanical advantage

Thanks

Thumbs up

Interesting find, Mark - looks like a great product. I'd not heard of them, but after reading up on them if I ever anticipate driving in winter conditions I'll have a set in my trunk.

I found them here http://store.yahoo.com/sports-imports/sncltrsy.html for a few bucks less, and with some detailed pics.

I am familiar with them and looked into a set for Da C last year, one small problem, they don't come in 18" as of about 3 months ago. These would be great to keep in the trunk for a suprise blizzard or ice storm. I wonder if 17s can be stretch fitted.

Edit:Now looking at the website, thier design has changed to a universal style, I will almost certainly get a set.

They now come in 3 general sizes (size 2 for all 300C 18s) and fit up to 22.5" wheels.

There's a size for every LX no matter how rad one has gone with wheels & tires.

These look good, except check out the FAQ. This is one of the Q/A in the FAQ:

Q: Will GoClaws work on pure ice?
A: No

Very good point to bring up but neither will stock tires. New gen snows will bite the ice. Would be nice if they had provisions to screw some studs in the claws.
