new tie rods at 22,000 miles!

my steering was making a clicking sound, so i brought it into the dealer. when stopped, if i turned the wheel a quarter turn left or right, it would make a clicking sound, which seemed to be coming out of the passenger front area of the vehicle. it still handled fine, still drove fine, but i had them take a look at it while it was in there for a free oil change.

the service writer called me about 2 hours after i took it in, saying it needed outer tie rod ends on BOTH sides. um, ok. at 22,000 miles, isn't that a little soon for steering parts to wear out? my vehicle is completely bone stock aside from some light bulbs and stereo stuff, never been in an accident, never even scuffed a rim on a curb.

anyone had a similar experience or did i get defective parts? i could see these parts breaking if i had big heavy rims, but i don't.

Pretty common problem I see a lot of here. I've seen some people need them replaced even sooner than you.

Our tie rods are a common problem. The mechanic at the shop I work at recently replaced the tie rods on an 2006 Touring. I also had another customer ask me if I replaced my tie rods on my 300C. He needed his replaced at 25K miles.
