My front wheels had a lot of play and knocking sound when I held the wheel in the 3 and 9 O'Clock position. You can see it these vids.

My first thought was bad tie rods because the wheels exhibited the symptoms often described for bad tie rods. However I never had any other symptoms like popping noises, wheel vibrations at high speeds, or road wander that are other symptoms of bad tie rods. The alignment shop also said my tie rods were OK. Apparently during an alignment bad outer ties rods are real obvious because the alignment specs will keep changing and it is hard to set the toe.
Later I found my tension strut bushings were torn and the dealer replaced them. After the tension struts were replaced my wheel wiggle/knocking sound was significantly reduced.
So be carefully jumping to conclusions that wheel play are bad tie rods.
