KW Variant 2 rear access panel

I remember seeing meister's old thread about cutting the rear carpet to access the top of the shocks to adjust the dampening in the rear, but the pictures are now gone. Has anyone done this that can show me a picture of where/how big to cut?

Also, what is everyone running dampening wise? I'm in la --->crap roads, and 1 front, 2 rear is not cool...way too bumpy. I did 2, 2 and it is still crap, so I am hoping that maybe I need to loosen the rear?

Last ?, I have the dreaded passenger side rear clunk when going over bumps. Some say it may be a torquing issue, but they were tightened equally to the left rear that does not make noise. Any thoughts? I know about the bushing and am hoping I don't have to drop the rear end for a picture, and then again to install.

Thanks for the help folks.

I just lift up the carpet to adjust them... I looked at the cut method but as I was eyeballing my car, I just pulled it up and went at it sans cuts.. but he made the cuts right above the shock on both sides if I remember correctly. I probably have it on my laptop, but it is not readily available right now.

I run the rear almost all the way loose.. but to tell you the truth, I can't tell a difference by my seat of the pants between any of the settings front or rear. I imagine on a track it would make a big difference in lap times, but for me its ????.

I have the clunk too.... I checked everything out, but didn't find anything before I went to Iraq last year. Once I get this cervical collar off my neck and back driving I will revisit it again

Here are the pics from Meister's photobucket account.

I also cut the carpet but now regret it.
It is easy enough to remove the carpet to make the adjustments.

Thanks. My clunk may be the spring not sitting correctly, or a loose nut on the lower shock. I am going to check it out this weekend so cross your fingers.

Thanks. Those are perfect pictures. How do you remove the carpet? Does it just pull out? I adjusted the front to 3 turns and it is better, but I think I need to adjust the rear one more turn to be happy.

It has been awhile so I am doing this from memory.
Once you remove the floor cover over the spare tire you begin to see how the carpet panels can be removed.

First remove the net, then remove the floor cover over the spare tire.
Unscrew the knobs on each side of the trunk holding the carpet paneling to the side of the trunk.
The knobs are near the lower net hooks, if I remember correctly.
There are three carpet panels.
One over each wheel well, and one along the rear of the trunk.
All three panels are held with push pins. Just pull the panels and the push pins will pop out. Or use pliers to remove the push pins.
The push pins can be used again if you are careful not to damage them.
