wheel bearing replacement??

ok so i have whining/metal grinding sound com from 3 of 4 corners of my car and im almost certain its a wheel bearing.

now my question is, can i just replace the bearing, or do i have to replace the entire hub assembly??

ive changed rotors, pad, calipers before, would this be a job i could do myself, with simple tools??

I had to change my front passengers at 92,000km, it made a horrible sound, it was only $300 for the part and #190 for labour. I now have 194,000km on my car and everything is great except the front shocks are gone.

$190 labour for 1/2 hour labour for a front wheel bearing, you've been shafted mate, next time anyone has a bearing failure dont get it from a stealerships, there's a part number on the bearing,go down to your local bearing shop(well we have them in the UK)quote the number and it will probably cost about $20 and it really does take 1/2 hour to do.The stealers will replace the whole hub assembly(which slides off the stub axle with so much ease)when all you need is a vice, circlip pliers and a hammer and the spanners etc.,to remove it in the first place.Once the wheel/caliper /brakes etc are removed all thats left is to remove/replace the bearing into the hub.I'm sure a shop will do it for $20-$30 if you cant remove the bearing on a loose hub

UK, it's a complete Bearing/Hub assembly - - you cannot replace just the bearing because there is no separate outer race. The hub itself actually acts as the race for the bearing to ride on, so your estimate of $20 or $30 is way off. $300 is about right for the part but I agree the labor seems a bit high.

to the O/P.... how many miles on your car? I only have 13,000 miles on my 300C but I have owned other cars with sealed bearing/hub units and never had to replace one. My last car was a Supercharged T-Bird SC that I drove like I stole it, and in 146,000 miles never had to replace a wheel bearing. They last a LONG time under normal circumstances. I'd be very surprised if you have 3 bad wheel bearings.

I have never ever seen a hub used as an outer race and I've replaced more hub bearings than anyone has had hot dinners, normally the hub bearing carrier is a cast item with a machined inner face and the bearing race is an interference fit needing a press or similar to press the bearing into this machined inner face,if your way is correct how on earth do the balls in the bearing run smoothly.I need some pics of the front bearing and hub assembly with the bearing out before I'm convinced

Most modern cars use a Hub/Bearing assembly and our cars are no exception. The bearing does not press out of the hub because the hub itself also serves as the outer race. There are some exceptions to this (some 90's VW's come to mind) but our cars use a bearing/hub assembly.

Good news is you can get the at NAPA for way less than $300. part number for the front is BR930359, retails for about $135. the rear number is BR930446 for about $210.00

Hi
I think u have to replace the entire hub assembly.I know its a costly job.I will suggest u to check the famous Canadian site for replacing autoparts at cheap prices.
