Interesting facts:
Beaumont, TX to El Paso: 742 miles
Beaumont, TX to Chicago: 770 miles
Actually the mileage is a bit farther, W. border to E. border.
El Paso, TX. (W. border) to Orange, TX. (E. border) is 856 miles and will take you almost 13 hours to drive across the state of Texas.

El Paso is closer to California than to Dallas
How right you are. When I drove to Cali., last spring, for Spring Fling event. From Houston to El Paso took me longer to drive than from El Paso to Irvine, CA. Once you hit New Mexico, the drive goes quick to CA.
