Tuning Diablo Canned 93 CAI

Hi Guys,

Old 5.7 300C driver here (3 years) with new Diablo U7135.

My car is stock, although I just replaced the thermostat with 180c unit.

I am running 91 US octane premium and the 93 CAI tune. I spoke with Diablo tech support, as my unit only shipped with 93 canned tunes. They explained this was due to lack of storage for export vehicles. They also explained the 91 and 93 canned tunes are IDENTICAL with exception of the WOT spark timing. This made me feel better about the rest of the Map's below WOT so decided to tweak the 93 tune with logging to see what I could obtain.

My first run with only -1deg at 4000-4800 rpm suffered knock bad!!! See results #1.

I then reduced the spark by 3 and added 3% fuel. Not much better. See result #2.

Then I spent a good few hours searching the forums here and picked up the following key points:
  • Set cooling fans for 185/195/195 with the 180 thermostat (stevesrt8). Check done.
  • Knock most likely due to lean mixtures, often 3-15% more fuel required (NeverToFast). Check done.
  • Canned tunes run LEAN!!!
  • Ideal spark timing is around 21-24 degrees.
So, take a look at my third tune, knock is under control, I think my next tweak should be:
Fuel: +6.5, +8.0, +10.0
Spark: -1.0, -3.0, -3.0

Do you think I am on the right track? I know, get a CMR tune... I'd like to have a go first!

BTW, this 3rd tune with firmer shifts is awesome, I have never felt a kick in the pants like this in 3 years!!! Pulls hard and strong!!!!

Thanks in advance.

Wayne.

Definitely on the right track!

When we created this tuning sub-forum the hope was that members would post up charts exactly as you have done.

Thanks for sharing your settings along with your comments, Wayne.

This will prove useful to others, who - hopefully - will share their findings.

yep, you will require TONS of extra fuel to prevent the car from pulling timing due to knock/pre-ignition.

Shop for better fuel. The car will tell you what it likes. Then you won't have to pull timing. Due to the cylinder head design these engines need all the advance to run sharp.

I use an additive on track days and it can reduce the KR to zero all by itself! PM me for details.

No Worries. I forgot to add on the charts that tune 3 includes 180 thermo and fans set to 185/195/195. All 3 tunes/logs are at 38c ambient! Hot as hell with A/C on!

Today I tuned a little more and logged the results. Caltex Vortex 95. Knock is now ZERO!

I added more fuel, and increased spark 2 deg (from -5 to -3).

I am confused however, why is my Actual spark lower than in test #3? Is this a result of too much fuel now?

EDIT: Interesting observation, I had my son in the passengers seat today, observing live data. We drove across a rail crossing at 70km/h and ST knock reached 10 degrees due to the vibration of crossing the rails!!!!!! hehe.

What do you guys think of this tune/results? Is 3.0 - 3.5 ST KNK @ WOT too much?

A few queries:
  1. I am seeing ST/LT KNK at part throttle, and I can't tune that part of the maps.
  2. How can I tune to get Act Spark up around 22-23 degrees?
  3. Logging pedal position AND throttle position sensor, I am seeing the throttle lag I know and hate. What is causing this? ESP? How can it be reduced?
Cheers.
