Color-Matching Wheels (TIS 07)

In speaking with a few body shops, I've received vastly different responses regarding this question.

I have 22" TIS 07's in chrome, and want to color-match the centers to my Midnight Blue Pearl C. My question/concern is: Can this even be done correctly/reliably?

The opinion I've received from some is that the paint would never hold up properly even if the chrome was prepped correctly for paint. Some have said that it would take actually removing the chrome from the center spokes to get the proper adhesion and life out of the paint.

Anyone have any ideas and/or first hand experience with this? Any opinions are appreciated. My next step is to pick up a set of wheels that are already painted in the centers (i.e. Dub Creams) and then just color-match those.

Thanks to all who reply!

a special primer for chrome is used..then it gets painted. The chrome is not removed.

we've been doing it for years with no issues whatsoever.

Etching primer

Etching primer can be used but there is certainly a better adhesion to bare metal. I've been through painting over chrome (using an etching primer) on a 1pc wheel before w/ not so good results. We sent some Asanti centers to be chrome stripped before painting this time. Hopefully we will have better long term results. There is not really much choice on a 1pc wheel though. Hope this helps

As AspenDog has stated. Working with a one-piece wheel is difficult. There is ethching primer and like RIM1 stated a primer for Chrome.

I have had all of my wheels painted and not had any problems.

If you have a 2 or 3 piece wheel. I would break the wheel down, so the centers can be stripped, if they are chrome, to get to the bare metal and then primer and paint.

I recently took my 2 piece wheels apart and I am having the centers painted in Silver Steel Metallic. Granted my centers are already painted Black. If they were chrome I would have had them stripped down to the bare metal, then primer and paint.

Seeing as I won't be going towards a 2 or 3 piece wheel, I guess that the opinions of the body shops weren't too far off.

I've got some of the same varying opinions here as I have asking around my hometown. Seems as though using the etching primer and then the primer setup especially for chrome may be my only option.

Considering I'll be working with a one piece wheel, the quality of the finished product will seem to rest entirely on the masking and prep.

Thanks for replies. It's very much appreciated.
