Welp, running to my wheel guy after my 12:00 class today, he said he's gonna take pictures, send them over to MOZ, and see if they'll let me ride the wheels, while the get a new one made up, then once it gets here, he'll send the torn up one back, and they'll re-imburse him. I'll let ya'll know this afternoon what they say. Also, I dont think i'm going to reveal the wheels just yet! I want it to be a suprise because the car is FINALLY finished with it's 2nd state of mods. I'll post up pics this coming weekend if I'm still on the new wheels. If not, then I guess ya'll will hafta wait until next weekend!!!!

As I recall, he had similar problems with the Helo rims he had....
They kept chipping...
I think the final reason was because they kept coating over a chrome rim!!!!
Make sure they are not doing this....could be the coulprit!!!!!
Hope all works out and I cant wait to see the end results!!!!
That's exactly what they're doing. I didn't know that this was bad to do though, I thought they just scuff the chrome, and then they can paint/powdercoat it. I do know for a fact though that they're painting over a solid chrome wheel. Explain some more to me!

Contact James....He is very helpful and Im sure he can elaborate more on this and how he fixed it...
Im not quite sure about the powdercoating, but I know painted rims have been a problem to some rims due to adhesions to the chrome....
I dont know if it was ever resolved though, I know that he has since switched to painted Asanti's.....

Remember, Chrome is a plating process. The wheel is going to be aluminum.
For a manufacturer to paint or powdercoat over chrome is crazy, chroming is expensive. They would typically do it to an unfinished wheel.
Look under the chips at the wheel... is it MIRROR smooth and reflective? Is it magnetic? This would indicate real chrome plating. Can you scratch the surface with a drill bit? If you can, it is NOT chrome plated.
There is clear powdercoating available, but is NOT necessary to put clear on top of color powdercoating. Properly done, powdercoating will apply a thick smooth surface that is highly reflective (although satin and flat is also available).
Powdercoating is a process where they spray a "dry" coating on the part, then hang it in an oven (~300 degrees?) until the coating cures. I have NEVER had any of my powdercoating chip. Years later it is still glossy.
Some vendors sell products that are "powdercoated", but the coating is no better than rattle can primer. A professional coating shop will not do this cheap stuff.
Having said all that, I would think that you could powdercoat over chrome with success, if done by a quality shop. Not the best thing to do however, as the surface is WAY too smooth for anything to adhere. It is nearly impossible to "scuff up" the surface of chrome. If you have to remove chrome, take it to a plating shop and they can "dechrome" it buy hanging it in a special bath and reversing the polarity. I had this done on my bumpers before. It has to be a full service shop, though... most small plating shops will not have this capacity.

Well here's the deal. The wheels are painted black over the solid chrome wheel. The scratches are from the air gun the wheel place used to put them on, so the guy offered to have the wheels repainted black for free, OR I can have them painted brilliant black to match the car for $50. Guess what i'm doing!!! I can't wait. Everything is taken care of, so that's good.
