They are not cheap, but definately the best... NOKIAN RSI

Nokian Tires

I had them on my Lexus SC 400, which is possibly the worst car to drive in snow... I was able to blow off just about anything off the road, including 4x4's. I NEVER got stuck ANYWHERE with them. Totally incredible tires.

Thanks Guys,

Ok next stupid question, I know f'all about tire sizes, my currents are the stock 225/60R18. I'm assuming I have to stick with the tire size, or do I have some latitude. I'm struggling to find any winter tires in this size?

Thanks,

Chris

IF you want the tire to have some serious bite, go below your current size. If you have 225's for summer, I would take 195's or 205's.
My Lex had 265's summer and 185's winter. These tires are not for show, they are serious winter tires. Look at the rallye cars, 400-500HP with 185's... Narrow is MUCH better in snow and ice.

If you are conserned about the good looks, get regular 225's, but you'll get stuck in the snow eventually.

Blizzaks are OK, the only problem they have is the decent grip (not even comparable to Nokian) in the beginning of the tire's life vs. the quick fading of grip after 3-5K miles.

i wanted to stick w/stock tire size, they dont come in that for the car.

we first started using blizzaks on our '99 LHS turned that car into a tank! when we sold it it had 55k miles on the car...half of which was on blizzaks and the winter after we sold it i installed the tires for the new owners..that car stopped on a dime and got going as well as when the tires were new.

the one thing i can see as being a factor is up here winter tires get virturly no wear as our roads are snow/ice coverd all winter, we do not salt so there is not much pavment snowing from october-april...as even after 25k or so miles the blizzaks still had almost 85% tread atleast and blenty of bite.

i live in canada and can go through a foot of snow with my rwd and 255 55 18 proxes s/t which are not the best for snow as most people will tell you, i do need about 150 pouunds in the trunk though. With awd and snow tire you will have no problems, if you go with 255 55 18 you have lots of choices and could probibly find a cheaper set due to the selection

Well from my understanding of road tires, winter tires do a better job in colder weather as well, not only in snow, normal tires grip starts to drop once the temp drops below 7deg as they start to harden, whereas winter tires are a softer compound and don't harden. As aside I do a lot of driving across the snowy mountain ranges in the middle of the Island.

I may be in B.C. but our local ski resort holds the record for the deepest snow base in Canada
