FYI about ordering from tirerack.com

This is a FYI. I ordered rims from them yesterday. I placed my order on my Bank debit card which is also a visa. they called 20 min later wanting to verify my phone number. the problem was that my phone number is unlisted as many are. because of this they could not processes my order. They then wanted my cell phone number and ssn# so they could call my cell phone company with me on the line and verify my cell number.... after that verifacation they then call the cell and leave you a ref number to call back to them to verify you have the cell phone. With all this said I finally got the rims shipped out. wow what a pain. I am mearly bringing this up to let you know their security process. Not sure how the rest of the companies are but wanted to share this with all that shop online. Be prepaired.

I think I would be prepared to hang up. I have never had any experience like that and I have spent big bucks on line....but, never with a debit card....could the debit card angle be what caused that? If so, I will add this to my list of reasons on why I have no plans to ever have a debit card.

has nothing to do with it being a debit card...it is a visa as well. its what they do to all their customers period..

Man, I don't know what to say. Using a VISA credit card, the most strigent safety precautions I have been faced with are 1) shipping address must be same as the on file billing address and 2) providing the verification number on the back of the card.

Providing my Social Security number when the seller is not providing financing? I don't think so. Why don't you call the customer service number on your card and see if that is even "allowed".....to make the cards easy to use, providers have guidelines merchants are supposed to follow....it sounds like this merchant might be exceeding established procedures.

As a merchant, I can say Credit and Debit cards are very different regardless of logo. Debit transactions that cannot be collected upon are not underwritten by Visa, nor are banks required to pay the merchant their due. We have to verify ownership of a debit card differently that a credit card as well.

Also for you as a consumer, your recourse if an online retail screws you is limited with a debit card. Also refunds to debit cards are slow to post because of the number of institutions involved with a reverse debit transaction.
Bottom line, even if you don't want to carry balances and don't like credit cards you need to own at least one with a modest limit to avoid hassles like this.

I have bought thousands of dollars worth of rims and tires from TireRack.com. They are professional to a fault and are the safest bet around when purchasing product. They have upheld there warranties without question and the prices on specialty tires are great. Believe me when I say if they had to do it that way it was for a real reason. This is not a fly by night little garage shop, this is a big professional operation since 1979.

I have spent plenty of money online and this card is like any other visa cards.... I'm not saying the tire rack is not a ligit place. they are a great place. On my TIS rims they were almost 30 dollers cheeper each than anyone else that had them in stock. I'm just warning that if you buy from them be ready thats all. now that I'm on file there will be no problems for future orders. They are just trying to protect from credit card fraud, Guess you have to respect that. It just caught me off guard and wanted to share...

I have also ordered 3 sets of rims and tires from tirerack.com and have found them to be top notch even when handling returns. I have also ordered from superbuytire.com who required me to fax a copy of my drivers license and western union the funds, etc. I then waited 3 months to get my rims. That was much more of a pain in the ass in my opinion. Many companies that take multi thousand dollar orders have a call back verification process to prevent fraud. Doesn't address you debit card question but I think you will find that most have had a positive experience with the tirerack....

Final note... hope you got the tire pressure monitors for your new rims or you will experience new frustration once you install them with the every 10 min beeping from the TPS system.

Talk to a guy at les schuab..... He told me that they have a kit to relocate the tire sensor for rims that the steam is in the wrong place. he said no problem there. I can't wait to get them and have them mount up the tires....

That just might be the problem....When I ordered tires I didn't have the problems you did, but I had them shipped directly to the installer and not my house.

Was the Thread starter doing this maybe? Is that why they were so strict?

Otherwise there shouldn't be an issue as long as you know the verification number on the back and the shipping address is the same as what you VISA is listed as.
