When you said the resistor was connected to the white and black wires, did you mean white with a black stripe?

No...take a look at the third picture. What you see is the relay and four wires coming out of it. One is black, one is white, one is red and one is blue. The resistor is connected to the black and white wires like what is shown in the picture. This makes the resistor parallel to the light and fools the computer into thinking the old light is still in the system.
