VW Money Pit begins re-assembly

18 months of headaches (welding/panel replacements + wait 8 months for a new gearbox), got my bus back from paint and the re-assembly begins!

Looking good, KB. Should be worth a bob or two when finished!

bought in May 2016, following which I managed 1 road trip before mincing the 4th gear....limped home in 3rd
decided to start restore myself....reinstalled heater system, upgraded engine etc. Then decided while it was in the shop for a new gearbox (transaxle) & steering updates to sort out some bubbling rust behind the front bumper, & told the guy to investigate....OMG!
I'd bought it in the first place because it looked almost pristine & little or no rust was visible, but under the panels some of the beams were shot.....heres some pics - note those showing the van in paint are how it looked on purchase - you can see why I thought it was good to go. After that I decided the whole van needed a microscopic inspection & new metal replacements adding where needed

the van was originally sent from Germany to Fiji, then ended up in Australia before coming to UK

oh my...what a surprise. A rusty VW? Unimaginable!

Good on you for moving it forward. Bug buses are becoming more scarce. They are just too cool to leave rusting into oblivion in some wrecker's yard.

Sephamore signals? Awesome! Reminds me of my old Morris Minor only those were metal panels only, no lights were installed.

And do you recall the slight problem when indicating to overtake at speed (60+ mph!). The semaphore would bend back and refuse to retract; a common sight on our few motorways, many years ago.
