Hello , I have viewed this site several times and new this was the place to get some insight on my 300c. I was cruising down a desert freeway at about 85mph and the car was as smooth as ever. I decided I would take it up to 100 and back just to see how it felt. Right as the car broke over 100mph there was a loud noise coming from the dash. It almost sounded like an air horn. I slowed and it went away so I did it again and right at 100mph it did it again. I tried it again with the accesories off and it did the same thing!!! I do have a crack the length of my window from the heat, i havnt modified the car other than a factory dub grill. The only thing I can think of is the Torque converter going slightly out of balance? Please help!
thanks
Mike

Mike Welcome!! Sounded like an air horn at 100. Was it the wife screaming at ya? Actually I have no input. Mine at 100 does not make any such noise. Most windshields are 2 piece affairs so I don't think it's that. There are some great knowledgeable people here who may chime in with a possible cause

Gee, at 100 mph, I hear nothing (but always check the rear view mirror for blue and red lights).

Over 135 mph, I start to get wispy wind noises and the Corsa exhaust growls.

Over 155 mph and all the way up to 178 mph, the wispies give way to the throaty roar of the Corsas.

Not a single air horn sound, though . . .

Here's a TSB that covers wind noise, but it was for 05/06 models. Even so, it could explain that it may be caused by wind passing over the molding which certainly could cause a noise at a specific speed - http://www.wkjeeps.com/misc/LX/TSB/TSB_2303106.pdf.

You mentioned you have a cracked windshield, but didn't mention how it was caused. This TSB indicates most cracked windshields are caused by impact, and it it also states the impact may have been on the molding which in turn caused the windshield to crack - http://www.wkjeeps.com/misc/LX/TSB/TSB_2304706.pdf.

For that reason, if there are visible "witness marks" on the molding, it could be possible the molding is sufficiently distorted to cause the wind noise.

The windshield crack was from washing the car in the heat with the a/c on type of deals.... it will cost 265 for that windshield. I am fairly certain it wasnt wind noise based on it coming from either the dash or under the dash. I have to think its something with the motor/trans. I guess I could always go tell the dealership it makes an air horn noise at 100mph....lol

Haha, yeah they'd have a hard time replicating that for sure.

I'm pretty sure that at speeds over 100 mph, my 300C would have a whining noise coming from the passenger seat. That is unless SHE was driving, then it would be more like giggling from the drivers seat! :pat:

Your air horn sound makes me think of loose weather stripping - you know sort of like when the wind blows hard thru the front door of your house. It may be you have a loose seal or strip that at that speed is vibrating and creating the noise. Good luck tracking it down.

I've done 100 before, and never heard that. However my car has a LOT of wind noise, I need to get it checked but I honestly don't think the dealer will do anything about it.

My whining noise increases as I increase speed exponentially. When I slow back down the whining then changes into telling me how bad I was and she is going to take my Hemi off me if I continue. Takes a lot of ongoing practice to ignore the whining, but it can be done.

Where could you bring the car up to 285 km/h? I've hit 302 km/h (189 mph) in my Porsche, but that was on a long straight during a race.

The key is to start ignoring the noise as soon as it becomes irritating. Most specialists in this begin by practising at home at the age of 3 or so. Later, these specialists discover that ignoring the noise only tends to make it worse. They have also discovered that any bright shiny object will mitigate it over time, especially if they use a hard plastic card with the words "VISA" or "AMEX" on it and use it to allow the offending emiter of said whine to use it.

On a Mexican Caraterra going through the High Sierra desert. Beautiful pavement, straight as an arrow and the Federales generally look the other way.

I actually got up to an indicated 183 mph but I know for sure by GPS calcs that I had a true 178 MPH. The big problem was that at that speed the fuel guage was going down as fast as the speedo was going up . . . and PEMEX fuel stations were few and far between,

As posted earlier, check the windshield TSB. I call it the tea pot TSB as that is what mine sounded like right at 90 mph. I thought it too was a driveline issue, but it is the windshield moulding that was installed incorrectly. Just take the TSB in to the dealer and tell them you have that noise above 70 mph.

It is good to hear that someone else has had the problem. The service bulletin that you posted is for 05 and 06 300c's? I have to have the windshield replaced because of the crack in it so I will see if they can install the moulding correctly and maybe it will go away. I do agree it sounds like a loud kazoo!!

do you have a CAI?
mine makes a noise when i get on it at highway speeds
the dealership said it was because of the CAI and some idle air motor or something when the car is cold
it whistles REALLY loudly when i get on it at highway speeds, goes away when it warms up

window crack

As it turns out the window crack that was on the front window shield was the cause of the tea pot sound at 100mph.
