OK all, I was thinking for a while about what the heck to do with the 2 JL Audio amps I have. The 450.4 (front 150x2 and rear 75x2) is way larger than the sub amp (500.1). I was thinking of dumping the spare tire, but I thought as soon as I did I would surely get a flat. I also though about building a rack that you can see when you fold down the seats, but I thought that would require too much trim work.

I liked the idea of having them up in the air kinda hanging and I wanted to cover up the box I have in there hanging from the rear deck. I attached an angled piece to the box (a JL 8W7 enclosure) and mounted the amps up. I am hoping the box is not going to rattle and vibrate alot it is made of 3/4 MDF and is bolted through the rear deck.

I am thinking of adding some cool trim pieces and maybe re-doing the color of the trunk, but that is a project for another day, lifting these stupid amps all day and cutting MDF in my 120 degree garage has killed me for the day - I am off to the pool for a while

Let me know what you think!

Thanks

Paul

JL amps & speakers off a Cleansweep

Paul

I love the way the amps are displayed in the portrait position. How much room is there underneath (enough for a set of clubs?)

Re. your JL system in general, I'm looking to do a similar setup. I too will go with a 500/1 monoblock for a deck mounted sub in a custom enclosure (don't want to use up too much trunk space). I'm debating between between a 300/4 vs. a 450/4 amp and whether the XRs are worth the extra $ over the TRs. What speakers did you go with? How did you split the front amp outputs between the dash and the doors? Did you put in a cap?

Also want to keep it stealth, so I'm looking at the Cleansweep on the standard head unit.

Any words of advice?

Thanks,

There is 12" from the bottom of the amps to the floor, should be plenty O room for the sticks, unless you are using one of those staff bags the one like Rodney Dangerfield in Caddy Shack.

I went with the XR 3 way set in the front (6.5" in the door, 4" mid in the dash, and 1" tweet will be put in the door), no need for caps, they are crossed over in the JL 3 way kit already. So, the 150x2 gets to push the 3 way set up front, and the 75x2 will get a simple JL XR COAX in the rear (or a set of Diamond coax, have not purchased these yet). By the way that amp (450.4) is SICK. Right now, I have it set up bandpass (playing the doors at 80hz-200 hz to the Kicker 8" mids with 150wx2, and 200hz and up to the front 4" Clif Designs coax 75wx2 - they are being replaced because the soft dome tweeter is too soft, and not enough to keep up with even the 8" JL W7.

To answer your questions about the JL speakers, I bought them without listening to them, so I am hoping they are OK. I heard from somone that the XRs take a bunch of power, but sound better... The Clif's I bought without listening to them, and they are OK only. Of course they are a much cheaper speaker as well...

If you need any help, please let me know. I am not a pro, but I have tried about everything out there... I know a guy at the local shop and he is good. If I can help you please let me know!

Thanks for your offer. I may well have a few questions for you, starting with this one :wink1:

I looked up the XR653-CS and noticed that they're rated at 70 W continuous power handling. Is it ok to drive them with a 150W RMS amp channel?

Re. cap, I was referring to the big thermos sized kind you hook up to the main power feed to keep your headlights from keeping time with the bass beat.

Thanks,

Thanks,
I called JL and they said the 150x2 would be perfect. He gave me some reasoning why the 70 watt rating, but I cant remember what he said. There was some sort of explanation given and I was like OH yah, that makes sense, even though I had no clue what he said... All I know is that he said go, and I went.

Ahhhh, I thought you meant speaker crossovers (caps)... Sorry. I am not doing one, I am only doing the 1 8" woofer, and I do not pound by system at all. I had the 8 hooked up with the 500.1 and the 450.4 and I did not notice lights dimming too much. The volt meter I keep on on the dash computer never went below 13v so I dont think the draw is too bad. The amps will not be up above 1/2 gain I would not think... I have heard mixed reviews on the caps any way. Some people sware by them, and some say they are eye candy. If anything maybe I will try a gel cell Optima battery...

Here are the pics tonight, wires are all connected and out of the way, trunk liner in the floor! Not sure if teh 8 through the deck is the best location almost sounds like there is more bass in the trunk than in the cabin?

Any input on that? Anyone think I should bring it down to the floor facing the rear?
