300C Transmission Shifting?

9911 Views 21 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  LWOOD
Will someone please explain the 300C 5-speed shifting system. If I am driving in "D" will the unit shift through all 5 gears automatically? The display only shows 1,2,3, D and 4. If it does what speed will it shift into the fifth gear? I understand I can use the autostick to downshift but am confused by the display. It only shows the manual gears selected as I understand it. Sorry for my stupidity. This is the first 5 speed I have ever had. I assume if I were to manually shift it from a dead stop I'd go through 1,2,3,4 then D. Is this correct? Thanks, regards, Bob.

thank you kevin ,somthing then is out of wack .because when im dead stoped and shift to auto stck mode the car stas at 4 and i have to down shift to 1st my self.and i iagree there is very little advantage to auto shifting .but its anew car every should be working normaly

ok now i'm confused. I thought you said that in the "D" position your car would not downshift to 1st when you come to a stop. It should definitely downshift and start off in first when in "D".

Now it sounds as if you are not in the "D" position when you experience this but rather in 'manual' mode in the '4' position. I've honestly never tried mine (2005) to see if it will start out in 4th gear.....not sure why I would... the whole point of the manual shifting mode would be to start out in '1' and manually go thru the gears. But like I said it doesn't shift exactly when you 'shift' it anyway - - the only real advantage to it is you could hold it in "3" or "4" for 'enthusiastic' driving on a curvy road.

Anytime you engage autostick mode, it will drop each gear progressively. So for instance, you are in D, tap left once, it shows 4, tap again 3, etc. At a stoplight, it does not go right into 1. You have to put it there. Keep in mind, The number of the gear showing on the instrument cluster is the HIGHEST gear the car will shift into. D=5 then 4, 3, 2, etc.

Sounds to me like your tranny is working fine, you were just not understanding what it was telling you.

Also, if you are in Autostick mode, say 3rd gear is showing on the display, and you brake for an upcoming stoplight, the tranny will downshift more aggressively toward 1st gear. Otherwise it is like a normal automatic and will staf in the highest possible gear without stalling to reduce resistence and increase fuel economy.
