Access EVIC Data & Diagnostic Trouble Codes

On an 8 hour drive yesterday I found there's a data display easter egg in the 300C Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC).

There are 7 pages of additional EVIC data you can access by pressing mode (music note) and compass on the steering wheel simultaneously for about 10 seconds. Use the leftmost Up/Dn arrows to scroll through the pages.

Page 1 - CCN SW P/N
Page 2 - Speed/RPM/Coolant Temp/BattV
Page 3 - Temp_AVG/Temp_RAW/Pedal_Position
Page 4 - Compass/Compass_RAW
Page 5 - Left/Right fuel tank level info
Page 6 - last VTA trig (???)
Page 7 - Chime request info,

What have I done now?

Well I played around a bit with one of the EVIC screens. I changed one of the numbers and I wonder what I did!?

There's a screen that looks like this:

VTA trig: None
Wake: CAN BUS
>190 Lgt: 237
HBduty 0%

The > is actually a filled-in triangle. I remember that the number to the right of > has always been 190, never changed. I pulled out of the parking garage and in the first few seconds of driving the Lgt: number went up a couple digits, so that line now said

>190 Lgt: 239

and the Lgt: number stayed the same throughout my drive. Then pressed the > button on the steering wheel, and it changed the number after the > on the display! Each time I pressed it, the number went up by 2, so 192, 194, 196. Now after three presses I stopped because I didn't see a way to make the number go back down. So now it says

>196 Lgt: 239

and there it stayed the rest of the way home. After parking the car at home and checking a couple hours later, that line now says

>196 Lgt: 237

so the Lgt: number went back down to 237 but the 196 is stuck.

Does anyone know what these numbers mean?:wtf:

I thought taht it was just me, so count me in. I'd love to know what I've done as well.

It's for the Headlights

OK I'm pretty sure I know what this is. At work I park in a big indoor parking garage. When I drove into the garage the Lgt: number went up from about 30 to 230. Driving around before that it was in the range from 30 to 50. Last night I had left work after dark so the number stayed high.

Lgt: is the ambient light level. Higher means less light.

So > must point to the automatic headlight trigger level. When the Lgt: level exceeds the > level, the headlights turn on. So I've just moved my trigger level from 190 to 196. It will have to get a little darker before my headlights turn on when they are on the automatic setting.

I'll try to watch this to confirm.

I still don't know how to reduce the trigger level (make the lights turn on at a higher ambient light level). Maybe it's on a cycle so that if I make > go up to say 220, it cycles back to 180? But I don't want to try this and get stuck with automatic headlights that never come on!

Also the second line changed today. Now it says

Wake: LF door

This must mean "Left Front door". I tried opening and closing the passenger side door and turned the key to "on", expecting "LF" to turn to "RF". But it didn't and it still says "LF".

cheers artichoke

I only feel 1/2 as stupid now, compared to when I started messing with things that I did not understand.

p.s if you keep pressing the arrow it goes back to 150 9but it could be 160) before going back up again - phew, no damage done.

I did the same thing last weekend. Fear not, the light sensitivity reading (190) loops around. By pushing the > it eventually reaches 220, then drops to 150 from which point you can increase it back to 190 (if you like).

VTA is Vehicle Theft Alarm. WAKE is what last triggered it. Normally this is the CAN BUS. You must have opened the LF door without disabling the alarm (with the ignition master key) at some point.

Interesting reading that the North American 300C has automatic "on" lights. That is conspicuously absent on the Aussie model. Funny thing was, when I was showing my dealer's service guys the "easter egg", they looked at this 'page' and made a comment that maybe future 300C models will get the auto on feature. :dunno:

Still seems nobody knows what HBduty is.

Excellent.. Thanks for the Easter Egg.. I wondered if I could get a digital speedometer... I LOVE IT.

I just realized that on my 2006 I can get the digital speedometer without the rpm and other stuff using that proceedure.
I get a few other pages too..

Is it possible to get JUST the digital speedo on a 2005?
Thanks, guys, for the confirmation on the headlight level stuff.

Well it didn't set off the alarm. I always unlock the doors with the remote. Well ... now it's back to saying CANBUS since I got in the car after work this afternoon.

Hi Hemi57

I've got the same feeling (a bit like peeing into a wetsuit) that my UK spec 300c does not have the light sensors equipped. I'm going to try a few experiments later on and see.

My US-spec one has a setting for "Auto" on the headlight selector rotating knob to the driver's left. Do the UK and Aussie ones lack this position on the knob?

artichoke, nope we don't have the "Auto" for the headlights. We get gots of equipment standard but they trimmed on a few items which just aren't available on the Aussie version, eg. Sat Nav, adjustable pedals, powered steering adjust for reach & height (we get manual adjust from height only), no U-Connect, Garage Door opener and other bits and pieces.
How to get Code when Check Engine Light comes on

QuikSilver said:
I apologize - It's actually 3 times : On-Acc-On-Acc-On-Acc and where the mileage odometer usually reads it will come up with dashed lines "--------"
and then codes that read "P0128" (example only) and then "Done"

Try it and let me know what code #(s) comes up?

Hope this helps

EVIC codes

This is very cool. I love this option.
for you non us C owners you might have the automatic lights and not know it. i saw a post on the LXforums where they modded there light switch so that they could move it one more click to the left. they didnt have auto headlights until that time. dont know for sure if it works on your c's but might be something worth checking out. http://www.lxforums.com/board/showthread.php?t=16999

Hi Urbanchemist

It can't be that easy, can it ? although I hope that it is because its well worth checking out.

thank you very much

p.s. do you know why have to take the switch out to do the mod ? It looks very doable in situ

Remeber seeing this mod also on the LXForums for the magnums.
If i rmeber correctly all you have to do is remove the knob and break a tab or something and thats it.

Heh this sounds very likely to me. It costs them the same to put in any electronic module -- the cost is all R&D. It's just like computer chips themselves: do you remember maybe 15 years ago, Intel 386's with and without the floating point processor? They were the same chip, you just had to short a couple pins together or something to turn one into the other.

But you're gonna spoil their marketing fun when they release this exciting feature for Model Year 2009! Also your EVIC software won't support stuff like adjusting the ambient light level at which the lights come on -- maybe you can get reflashed in 2009 or whenever it's released there, though.

By the way this is my 555th post so it's appropriate that I talk about chips. Anyone else used an NE555 timer chip? I spent a whole summer building an X-ray control circuit with one of those. Got a few 10KV (that's the power side voltage that drives the X-ray tube) shocks and learned real fast to work with one hand in my pocket as much as possible!

If your car has climate control you can enable auto headlamps by doing that switch mod (just pull out the knob most of the way and try to turn it to the left it should click once more)..

It became a standard part on the chargers/magnums with electronics convinience group a few months ago.

Success, I now have the first auto headlight dimming equipped car in the UK (unless Belmont beat me to it).
