so as we all know avelectronics can hack the video screen, they need to hack the audio as well. We've got this awesome bostom accoustic setup, and we have to transmit the audio through an FM modulator??? come on now!... wuddya guys think? there gata be away to hack into the factory amplifier? what about the navigation drive, theres obviously a processor, and it uses the dvd technology, I think its just a matter of software making it capable of reading a DVD, I personally dont have the smarts to hack software in a car, but I know theres those guru's out there that are perfectly capable, we gata get ahold of these people and these companies to help us... but in the meantime it looks like a digital fm modulator is my best bet (FOR NOW) so those of you that are using one to play dvds and such, how does it sound honestly....?

mine (FM modulator) sounds like poop.. been burning mp3 cd's but the audio upgrades I had done reveal the flaws in even mp3's ripped at 224k (can't stand the artifacting in mp3's ripped at lower rates). So I've switched back to carting around a big book of CD's.. a little bit of a pain but everything sounds great.

The guys at brampton assembly plant mentioned the '06 chargers they built for quality checks had the new dvd video units built into the dash. So I assume in the next few months we should be able to order a factory dvd/nav/audio unit. We'll see.

Factory DVD units are crap and I wouldn't waste money getting one. Mostly likely it'll be similar to the DVD units they offer the in Chrysler mini van's. And yes FM mod always sound like crap so the best way around it is to purchase a aftermarket HU.

Agreed...no automaker will ever offer as high quality unit as an aftermarket. How do I know this?? Because the only way our industry will survive is to offer our customers more. The aftermarket has to produce cleaner, cooler and just plain better products or people like you won't have any reason to change.

I agree but I guess what I meant to say if they put a factory DVD player then the Nav screen will have the inputs for both the DVD and the stereo. No FM modulation or wire hacks for input. You should be abble to pop in an Alpine DVD player and hook it right into the system. no?

Our best bet is to have someone send their unit to AVelectronic and then take the unit apart to see where they patched in for audio and video. Their switcher system is not necessary, they make it a part of the package so you have to pay more.

I tried getting them to just do the audio/video in hack without the switcher... No go.

No, I dont think so, I believe when there talking about dvd, there referring to the dvd-rom based navigation system that uses dvd-rom instead of normal cd's... if you remember a few years ago you would normally get anywhere from 6 - 8 cds for the entire US, now all you need is 1 dvd for the whole US, and the dvdrom will not play dvds, and its made specifically that way, I mean you cant use 80% of the navigation functions while your driving, its also illegal in every state to drive while having video (UPFRONT) playing... which is why i HIGHLY doubt they are going to give you a/v inputs in the back so that you can hook a dvd player into it, otherwise they would of just made the dvd-rom capable of playing dvds....THEY DONT WANT YOU WATCHING MOVIES WHILE YOUR DRIVING, and im willing to bet if they ever did make it capable of reading dvds or giving you inputs the car would have to be parked in order to watch....

which is why we must find a way to hack into it

where theres a will............ theres a way ;)

Well here is a question if its dvd-rom then it can be read by a computer, has anyone popped the navigation cd into a computer and ripped it as an image. Are there chapters, its very possible there is a "boot image" on the dvd that allows it to pass and be run in the dvd drive included with the navigation unit. If this is there then possibly extracting just the boot image along with a ripping the main title from a dvd, combine , burn and drop in and your ready to go. Of course this would require ripping your dvd's but in my case I have a media server at home so most of mine are already ripped into chapeters or titles.

Just a thought, hopefully I will be getting a navi unit in the next month or so and I will take a look at it.

It would be similar to the way the early dreamcast used to be where the boot code was "leaked" and thus you could play dreamcast games burned to a cd without the need for a mod chip..

Nope.. Been there done that on ripping the NAVI disc to a backup DL DVD-R. The bootstrap and O/S for the NAV system is a firmware (EEPROM) thing, and not code on the disc. Been there done that on Dreamcast bootCD too - all optimistic ideas but its apples and oranges here.
Good deal, did not even think about the boot code being on the eeprom well it was worth a shot glad someone tried it already....

OK so your saying this guys has convertor that can be wired into the navi unit for 40 dollars to allow external audio/video???? thats damn cheap and almost scarry, but if it works I think you tell your stereo guy to probably expect 100 orders at least :)

no the new wired modulator can be wired into your navi unit and is only used for an audio output...if you would like to upgrade your stereo or add some bass to your factory sound system.... as far as the video part, avelectronics is your best bet, and to get the dvd player to play the sound through your factory stereo your lookin at a digital modulator as your best bet....(FOR NOW) - so like i said the wired mudulator just gives you an audio output (for subwoofer amp, for example)...;)

and the 40$ is dealer cost, so youll prolly pay a few more bucks for it, im jus lettin u know so that u dont completely ripped off.

i will know much more about it as soon as it comes in hopefully by friday or definitely monday.

Wired FM modulators are nothing new. They come with a switch, and when you flick the switch, they disable the factory antenna, making the modulator the only source of reception. I am currently running a wired modulator from David Navone whom makes some of the best in the business. I have also used units from DEI.

Unless your stereo guy is talking about modifying the unit itself and hardwiring an input, I believe he's simply talking about a wired modulator.

Do they work better than wireless ones? Sure. Will it satisfy most people? Maybe. I yanked mine out within a week and returned it. I was unhappy with the sound quality.

no its not a modulator, its a digital interface, converter that is wired into the unit in the back.... the audio is digital, were not talkin about using any kind of fm signal... this is the real deal, youll get a pair of rca's out the back of your unit... and as soon as i get it ill take pictures of the unit and the packaging

p.s. the factory navi must have an output to go to the factory amplifier, im assuming this digital converter will be wired in through that output, making it the same signal the factory amp gets from the factory deck....

hence...

clear sound - for you bassmatic needs

i wonder if theres a way to upload new software into the system, it can obviously read dvds, just needs the software to enable it....who knows, its for all u hackers out there

10 to1 I bet thats what the company that mod's these is doing, they are probably removing the eprom and reprogramming it to work with other media.

actually there not, i talked to avelectronics and what there doing is tapping into the video line and simply overriding the screen as soon as you turn on there little power switch, and all your factory things such as (navigation) are still runnin in the background - BUT ILL TAKE YOUR 10-1 ODDS :D

Not a single 2005 Chrysler NAV unit has been modded to play DVDs from its DVD slot. They all require usage of an extrernal DVD player mounted in the trunk or center console.
