My car was spiffed up on my way to a cruise-in last night when I spot something interesting at the light in front of me.

It was black and very nice. There were a few cars at the light, but as soon as the it changed he gunned it a little to get ahead of traffic.

I thought this could be interesting, it looks fast. So I whip around him real quick and sit next to him in the right lane. (No more cars around, I am somewhat safe ya know. )

He does nothing.

So then I punch it to get in front of him as not to cut him off so I could take a left up ahead. Well so does he. I didn't get into the throttle too much but he was definitely on my ass.

"Well I guess the Ivy league boy does wanna run!"

He then also gets into the left turn lane behind me.

So the light changes, and I take a left slowly and get in the right lane (again, no cars around)

I'm in the right lane, he's in the left about 3 car lengths behind.

I see in my side view mirror he punches it....Well, I didn't think it would be much of a contest so I let him catch up to me while he's full throttle before I nail it. (Gotta be careful when doing this, if someone slightly faster or even just as fast as you does this, you'll lose.)

Well, I nail it and immediately keep up door to door with him, then slooowly start to overtake. Once I hit 80 it was absolutely no contest it was a couple car lengths almost immediately I starting gaining. Then he hit his brakes and fell instantly dead back.

I let off and let him catch up. Gave him a thumbs up and he did the same.

Good run and one helluva fast SUV.......But not fast enough.

Did a little research this morning, it was DEFINITELY the 4.8is (355HP 369TQ) based on the rear exhaust being pretty wild.

Took down a Viper in my blown Vette once....I know what I'm up against usually and I knew I'd win (unless he's modified of course)

The 4.8is surprised the shit out of me, they're obviously faster than I thought.

I'll race anything that wants to try.

I didn't mention it because it's pointless, but on my way home from the cruise-in a kid in a Saturn with a fart pipe and nice wheels egged me on too.

....I punched it just to let him know what my car's about and let off. I'm sure he did it just to see if I'd do what I did. He wasn't interested in a real race.

They gave me a "Hoot!" and a thumbs up too. It's not always about winning or losing, just about showing off and having fun. Even if I'm gonna lose and I know it.

If it was my X5 I probably would've done what he did to me too. Sometimes you just wanna see how close you can come.

So yeah, I'll run a hummer if he tries, and give a big thumbs to him too for the "fun factor."

Those BMW X-5s with the 4.8 are awesome to drive. My new car choice came down to that versus the SRT8. With the exception of the Porsch Turbo, the soon to be SRT8 jeep, and the AMG SUV, that thing is the king of SUVs, and will smoke most cars with ease. They are sweet inside too, but for about $80K, they should be....

about a month ago on the way to golf in my wife old 1998 Volvo S70 T5 (236hp)...
I take the on-ramp onto a new freeway here...
two right turn lanes that are a hard 80 degree turn then a nice slight uphill onramp with 3 lanes (1 HOV), so I always get on it and I pass this guy (BMW SUV) with ease (not trying to race him) just get out in front of him far enough to be able to merge into traffic (I swear)...
I usually run it out though and there was no traffic, I was late (kids) and radar was silent - so i wound it out...
at the end of the third lane that merges with the 2 lanes I was at about 110-115...
and I look in my mirror but to see the white BMW X5...
huh?
never seen one of these in the neighborhood run, let alone one that ran like this...
so still no traffic, and I proceed to run into the higher arena...
just shy of your posted mark... (in a left hand sweeper, with PLENTY of visibility) brand new freeway with lots of room...
and he is still hanging with me...
ok, that's it...
it had been quite a while since I ran the Volvo top end and decided to see if she still had it in her...
let's just say I was still pulling when I limited and he at that point backed off...
when things are happening 5 times faster than normal it'll do that to you...
then we slowed down and thumbs up'ed each other!
and noticed it was the X5 4.8 - first time I had seen one...
best part we ended up at the same course, in the same tourney!!! - as both of us were late... :biggrin:

Great story! ... Good thing you didnt' flick him off or something.

I did that once to a guy who cut me off in traffic.....Ended up at the same party he was going to.

Let's just say there was a little tension in the air that night. :evil:

No I think you would and should definitely try based on the stats I pulled.

He might have been modified but I seriously doubt it.

It was only somewhat close in the beginning because I let him catch me. Like I said before, when you let someone get the jump on you for a couple seconds, you have to reel in before you can overtake and makes all the difference....If we hit it at the same time it would've been brutal I'm sure.


Case in point. My friend and I both own '00 Dakota's. Same EXACT truck. When we race and one of us gets just half a car jump, the one who gets the jump ends up pulling about 1-2 car lengths by 80 just based on the physics of time and speed.

2 years ago I owned a X5 4.4i and thought it was plenty quick. You're right, the 4.8i is reputedly one of the fastest SUV's around (excepting the Cayenne Turbo).

I'm glad to have the SRT-8 now, but still miss the X5 once in awhile; especially the 16-way comfort seats we ordered on our X5. The SRT's seats are pretty good, but lack much thigh support. Oh well, punch it, grin, forget almost everything else around you ... :slomo:

those x 5s will run a 5.6-5.7 0-60...so, if you can get your C there you will be fine. (I am aware there are published times well below that for the C, and many on this forum who get there, but I have read some posts who could not get there or even below 5.9-6.0). Also, much to the dismay of several members, I beat the C three outta three with my 745li, which I could get to5.7-5.8 consistently, based on the on board timer.) In other words, drivers race....

as 5.0 sec beats 5.7-5.8 every that time I know of...
kinda of like every putt that is short...
is missed 100% of the time...

oh yes...my srt8 is in a whole different league....he was talking about the 300C.....

no, I have no way to time my 0-60 in my srt8, so I can only guess at this point..and it is well under 5 by my guess.
