You might want to check out the Porter Cable 7424 Dual Action Orbital Polisher. I know it's not a high speed buffer but man it makes the car look good and it's way easier to use.

The PorterCable is a variable speed and an excellent choice. This is NOT a Wal-Mart type buffer. The key is using the right pad with whatever function you are performing. A good pad for compound is in the $30.00 range. Foam pad's are used for machine polish/Swirl marker remover. Worth the investment but used wrong can cause damage. If you ever need any assistance I'm more than happy to walk ya thru any steps

I suggest starting with a random orbit Porter Cable then moving up to a high-speed rotary. I myself use a Makita rotary but it took some time to learn.
