Cleaning the Dashboard?

11424 Views 34 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  turbomangt
What is the best way to clean the dashboard and keep it clean. The texture is king of grainy and rubbery and picks up dust really easy. Is there any preparation or good recommended method of cleaning it? Thanks, regards, Bob.

I have used the Gonzo dash wipe on many cars with textured grippy dashes (BMW, MB, VW all use currently or have used in the past the grippy rubber style dash). and never had it crumble or leave anything behind other than a nice clean dashboard. If the instructions on it say use it straight out dry that's what I did since I followed the instructions to the letter, but if you had just asked me what my instructions said I would have said "I don't remember, but I think they had me wash it before the first use." I'm not totally sure but for some reason I think I remember it saying to rinse it out and let it dry before using.

Hi. It does say it may be used many times before being washed. It says nothing about washing before initial use though. I have sent an e-mail to them to ask what the problem is. After I hear from them I'll report back. Maybe it was old while in the store storage. Thanks, regards, Bob.

I'll wait until your Dad gets his....Use gonzo, and then tell me how it works.

I don't think you realize just how coarse and uber slip resistant the dash is.
You know, I thought maybe my memory of the SRT dash was mistaken too vvv, so I went down to the local dealer yesterday and had a look see. The BMW ones are tackier if anything.

Look....I'm not doubting you, but let's stop "Dash board bench racing" and just wait until you get a chance to wipe one down is all I'm saying.

BTW: Why didn't you bring Gonzo with you and run it across? ... Considering you made a special trip and all.
Lexol Vinylex is made specifically for auto interiors. Comes in a spray (spray on a cloth and wipe on, never spray directly on the vinyl) or a handy pop-up wipe. I have both at a super low price, with 5% more off for 300forum members.

Has a UV protectant to slow sun deterioration (nothing stops it totally, all modern vinlyl has UV resistant treatment, but that goes away over the years).

Provides a heathy look, but not a high shine, which is not good on dashboards.

If whatever treatment you use is too shiny, then just wipe down with a damp cloth (water) and that should cut the effect.

Sounds very "chemically"

I like the way this sounds:

Mine is water based, the solvent stuff is what makes dashes look greasy/messy and slimely.
Didn't take the Gonzo with me because right now it's 420 miles away (on my own car I don't need it, it's got a nice old style smooth dash).

I spoke to a nice lady at Gonzo about this. She thinks the ones I bought may be old. She said it should not shed as it did. I am getting a free replacement sent to try it out. Will make the final report when it comes. Regards, Bob.

I was sent two replacement Gonzo Wipes, for free, to replace the defective ones. I used one and it works GREAT! Their Customer Service was excellent. I think the reason was that the ones I bought were in a Linen Shop of all places. Guess they were never sold for a long time. I don't understand why they market them in a Linen Shop but that's their business, I guess. Thanks Gonzo! Regards, Bob.

You never said whether you tried it on your Dad's car. :fing26:

Seemed fishy to me.

Besides, I said I'd buy one if it proved to work.

So Bob, does the Gonzo drag easily across the bumpy material then?
Drags Easy

Hi. After putting a Lexol conditioner on the dashboard it slides like a dream. No flaking at all. Works GREAT! The old ones were evidently damaged by sitting on the shelf before I bought them. Regards, Bob.
What would be the best product to get the scuff marks putting my seat belt on causes on the center console? I had my car for 2 weeks and i thought it would go away with a little rubbing!

Any solutions thanks?
Try a little all purpose cleaner (409/simple green) that will usually remove most stains, however sometimes you need a solvent based product. I use a solvent cleaner not available retail. If you can't remove the spot with all purpose, PM me and we can see how to get you some of what I use. Gary
