So I have a new black BMW "M7" (no such thing, but badged that way anyway) jacking with me on a four lane road. Stop lights for us side-by-side and he eases off the line as do I. At about 25 MPH he nails it and so do I - and then all hell breaks loose: The engine goes to down shift and dies - electronic throttle control light (a lightning bolt between reverse parentheses) flashes and I pull off the road - M7 drives away. I turn off and restart the car - even when floored in neutral it won't go past 4,000 RPM's. Get back on the road, floor it - dies again with same lights. I drive it home and of course a Trailblazer SS starts jacking with me. Mind you, I have gone two years without so much as a bicycle giving me a run, but now that my car is on the ropes two guys in less than 20 minutes want to play. Oh well.

So I take it to the dealer and they say it is a reflash - keep it overnight to try to diagnose. I beg them to take it out and flog it, which they claim they did. Got it back yesterday and drove it 450 miles without problems, but no low-end WOT events. A few high end full throttles at 70 MPH without incident. So of course today a THIRD guy show up next to me at a stop light in a newer Malibu with racing stickers. Light turns green, roll to around 25 (he is stomping it) and then I floor the SRT8 - DEAD with the ETC light flashing. Pull off the side of the road and restart. NOT HAPPY!!!

Three things of note:
  1. I have to drive to Denver & back starting tomorrow (1300 miles round trip) and can't get to a dealer before then.
  2. The car may not have died 100%: I noticed when I did it on purpose that it would drop immediately down to 800-1100 RPM's and stay there, even when you hit the gas. Only a restart would give it reasonable throttle response - albeit not more than 4K RPM's.
  3. Around that same time we heard a whine/whistle that seemed to be coming from the dash AFTER a full throttle event and usually only when flooring it at highway speeds. Thought it was the A/C fan but it wasn't. Can't pinpoint the sound. And it didn't do it yesterday but did today - before all the hoopla next to the Malibu.
Whew! I love this car like no other but am really frustrated with this latest problem. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated - we are off to Denver tomorrow and have our fingers crossed!

Y2K5SRT what kind of mods have you done to your car? It maybe that it's going into limp mode. Sorry, I don't know much about it, but I heard it happening to a lot of the guys that are heavily modded.
I would suggest to do a search in the forum to see how to take care of. Good luck and I hope you get it fixed soon.

Its definetly going into limp mode. Do you have a Predator? Jack up the rev limiter another couple hundred rpms. That should solve the issue.

BTW, are you sure the BMW wasn't a B7? They do exist, and have a 438hp supercharged Alpina motor.

Definitely an M7, no mods on my car, and already searched the forums with no luck. So off to Denver I go!

Well, I don't have a diagnosis, unfortunately, but this would piss me off!! Two potential runs and the car decides to play dead. Damn!! Hope you get it sorted out soon.

Hi there ,

I aws reading your thread and i have an almost identical problem with my 300c touring . Could you advise if it was a simple programming fix or something more sinister . thanks in advance

Sorry to hear about your problems. I have no idea what is causing them, but it does sound like "limp mode". I would recommend taking it to a dealer for diagnosis. Did it throw a CEL code and if so what code? If you had a Predator, you could figure out what the code means.

Limp mode is a protective defense by the computer if something goes amiss.

You need to get a dealer to hook up the Star Scan to diagnose the issue.

The good news is that the vast majority of 'limp mode' cases are electronic hiccups, easily fixed.

And no - throwing a Viagra tablet in the gas tank, definitely will not help!
