Engine Clicking/Tapping Sound at Idle

Has anyone ever experienced this issue? At idle, I can hear a faint but distinct "clicking" sound coming from the passenger side of the engine. With the hood closed, I hear the noise coming from the pasenger-side front wheelwell. I hear this noise while the car is not moving. The frequency of the clicking increases with RPM. I do not hear this noise under acceleration (probably because it is so faint).

If anyone else has experienced this, have you addressed the issue with your dealer and, if so, what did they say?

Had the same thing on a '93 Concorde....could have sworn it was a rocker arm, but it was some kind of emission valve near the passenger side valve cover. It was a few years ago but I think it only did it when idling in park. If I gave it some gas it went away.

That's a good possibility Arnold -- a friend of mine had something similar on his dodge van, when he put his hand on the valve he could "feel" the ticking, he replaced the valve and the ticking vanished.

It snowed here, about a month ago, and on that day, just after cold startup my SRT8, made a ticking noise that varied with engine speed. I had hear it before and recognised it as fuel injection ticking noise - it was too fast repetition to be a lifter. When the weather warmed the tick went away and has not returned. Not a fault just a function.

The lifters in the V8s are roller-type and if they have problems and make noise, it would not be a tick - more like a hammering.

Lastly, and most unlikely - unless you've been messing with the engine internals - is a rocker arm touching a valve cover - you like longshots this is one of the longest ever.

Some have said Mobil1 will cure lifter noise. :sgrin:  :sgrin:  (evil laughter)

I too have been having this experience as a matter of fact I took my car to Peterson Toyota in Nampa Idaho to be fixed cost me $3700 for me to still have this problem and the rear DEF to still be leaking oil so after they had it for a month. It is now back in there they are telling me at the ticking is nothing can somebody help me too because that’s taking is causing my car to slow the ticking was not there before and now all of a sudden is there. It didn’t start until my EGR valve had to be changed so could this have something to do with my EGR? If so you would think that the mechanics would know this supposedly my EGR valve had to be replaced and the tube was cut to my EGR which is really weird because my EGR and everything was just replaced by my brother.

You might get a better response if you go ahead and create your own thread instead of resurrecting a fifteen-year-old one.

Just out of curiosity, why would you take your Chrysler 300 to a Toyota dealer for service?
I believe what your hearing is not valve train or fuel injector noise, but an emission valve. You can really notice it at a drive up window or wall with the window down. I have the same sound in my Dodge 1500 van. It sounds like a tapping noise but it is not really a metallic sound. I heard this sound for years and one day while was working on it I reach down and put my hand on this valve and this was the culprit. It is a one way or a reed type valve. The van and my 300C both have roller lifters and if they were bad you would know it...it would sound like the hammers from hell!!!
Hey do u no what valve is it my Chrysler 300 is making the same noise wene it idles back and forth im thinking it has something to do with the emissions cause the idle goes uo and down any piece or valve i should replace
