We always called it the "oh sh*t" handle. Since that's what you say right before you grab it. :biggrin:SRT**8 said:I am the wife of SRT**8. I miss having a grab handle to hold onto. My husband's driving has gotten a little crazy and a handle would really be useful for ramps onto highways. Our family calls his car the Batmobile!!
The missing assist/grab handle is the first thing my wife noticed on our first test drive. I asked the dealer if they would install one, but they said no way, due to the side curtain air bags. The air bags are located where the grab handle would go. If you didn't buy the Option Group 1, with the supplemental air bags, then you should be able to have a handle installed.SRT**8 said:I am the wife of SRT**8. I miss having a grab handle to hold onto. To add a little more detail to what your dealer told you, joey, the air bag covers for the front seat side air curtains are located directly above the center of the upper door seals, while the air bag covers for the rear seat occupants are located just forward of door center in the rear seats.joey said:...I asked the dealer if they would install one, but they said no way, due to the side curtain air bags. I hear you, and you are probably right. But after seeing the first pick of the Magnum wreck, it looks like the rear passenger grab handle is right over the air bag. Just like it would be if there were a front passenger grab handle. Just from looking at these pics, it would "appear" Chrysler could have added a front grab handle. But what do I know. I keep having this sneaking suspicion it was a Chrysler cost saving idea, like the missing magazine holder on the back of the passenger seat.Meister said:To add a little more detail to what your dealer told you, joey, the front seat side air curtains are deployed from directly above the center of the upper door seals, while those for the rear seat occupants deploy from just forward of door center in the rear seats.
Thus passenger restraint handles for the front seat occupants would be located directly over the air bag doors, posing a hazard on air bag deployment. The rear seat air bag doors are located in a more forward positon, relative to the occupants, enabling the rear seats to have the grab handles, which mount aft of the air bag doors.
Interesting photos, joey, thanks.joey said:I hear you, and you are probably right. Well I guess Chrysler's design team could have designed their air bags differently to allow for a handle. Side air bags seem to have become the norm for today's autos and I think many other cars still have front grab/assist handles. I just don't take no for an answer! Come on Chrysler, put on your thinking caps and figure out a way to design in a handle!Meister said:Interesting photos, joey, thanks.
The distinction that I've made more clear in my earlier post is that it is the placement of the air bag doors themselves that is is critical to the question of whether or not grab handles could feasibly be installed. The front seat air bag doors are located precisely where the forward grab handles would go, thus precluding their installation. The rear air bag doors, conversely, are located in a more forward position relative to the seat occupants and thus leave space for mounting the grab bars to the rear of the air bag doors themselves.

My driving style is so tame it's damn near timid while my wife is in the car and still she's instictively reaching for a handle that's no longer there.chasb said:My wife usually grabs the nearest thing on me that's available.
It's no fun when I'm coming off the line or making a sharp turn.
