I've noticed my car has a slight shake at idle, almost like an old solid lifter big block chevy, or like a bad plug wire. Is that everyone's experience with their SRT8? I don't really mind it. I just want to know that there's nothing wrong with my car.

Try sitting in a Viper, you can shake up your chocolate milk w/out moving your hand
Pretty normal I think on the SRT8, I will observe tonight.

ms - Your pro-import bias is interests me. I've probably only owned a dozen or two German/Japanese cars over the years, compared to hundreds of Big Three vehicles. Yes, Toyexus motors run very smoothly. My point was simply that even compared to Buick 3800s, typical small block Chevys, 318 mopars, or 4.6 Northstars, my 6.1 has a little shake.

Thanks for the feedback. It's good to know that mine 'ain't broke.'

Well, I'm definitley NOT biased in favor of Japanese cars (I'll never buy one for as long as I live I can tell you that with certainty), though I'll admit to liking German cars (at least the old ones). I suppose that since my experience with American engines has been rare (nothing other than the ford 5.0 and 4.6 engines and a gm 4300 vortech), I am biased into thinking they are rougher in general...though I suppose the deville my grandfather had is pretty smooth. Anyways, yeah I'd say it's normal. I was told something about the cam timiing or something like that (yes the person realized it's a pushrod, I know nothing about how pushrod engines work though so I'm not exactly sure where the cam is involved).

Both our 5.7L Hemi Ram and our Magnum SRT-8 have a slight shake at idle. The SRT-8 is a bit more noticable, but when I found the cam specs I understand why. It is a pretty good duration for a factory cam.

Thanks Todd. I was thinking the same thing. It feels like a fairly high-lift cam. I just wanted to make sure they're all like that. Mine is still the only one I've seen, so I have nothing to compare it to. I appreciate the input.

Well honestly I can't say that I've noticed it, but it could be because I've owned various high compression and/or big block V8 cars before so I'm immune to it.

But honestly I don't think it's there in my car, just very smooth almost like it's not running.

Mine was rough at idle also. There is a TSB for it, had it done, no more rough idle.

VVV the pink Prius doesn't count in this discussion. :wink1:

Now the Viper Motor, that will put some vibe in your backside for sure- oh so good though! Smooth, but yet growling with a purr that will put chill bumps down your spine. WOT look TFO! Sorry, just got carried away. Now where are my SRT10 keys.... time for a spin..........

I got to drive 2 different MSRT-8's at SRT Track Experience and they had almost exactly the same shimmy at idle as my CSRT-8, so I think you can write it off as long duration/high lift cam issue. Note that Car and Driver said that our cam grind was straight out of the old 340 parts bin!

I have a thread on the cam specs in this forum. Search my user name or 6.1L Cam specs.
