Ok, so I have been long lusting after a painted engine cover and no other color could ever do then the classic Hemi Orange.

1 coat of primer, 2 mist coats of HEMI engien orange, 1 wet coat folled by 2 coats of crystal clear gloss. All paints and primer by Dupli-Color, via spray paint.

Extremely easy and fun mod to do.

While I was at it, I painted the center cover chrome also....

WHat do you think? Can I join the PECC?

Definatly looks nice SLK!
I too am going to paint my cover orange, when I get the time, lol. I was going to use 'chevy orange' high temp ceramic paint from autozone, but worry it will be too dull. Just curious where you got your paint from, Im gonna to to my local paint store and see if they have the orange, primer, and gloss from dupli-color.
Im also thinking about painting the center piece in BB....

Just started my Engine Cover project.

Plan to...

* "chrome" the HEMI lettering
* add some graphics to the center
* paint the 5.7L V8 with Briliant Black Perl color

Haven't yet decided whether or not to go with the polished center or ?

I am planning to clear coat the whole thing once complete. Any comments or suggestions would be very welcome...

slk320, looks Great!!
The traditional hemi orange is probably the best color with silver, although I have been considering Corvette Torch Red for my calipers and this might look real purdy on the engine cover as well....

J, when painting the 5.7, be very careful. I ruined my silver insert with bleeding paint despite "careful taping". You might consider the vinyl black letters for the 5.7 like my orange letters. Here is what they look like, imagine them in black.
The chrome HEMI letters I got are actually vinyl and are very good but not perfect, there are some fine abrasions on the surface, not really noticeable except by me.

SLk I like! I'm going to paint my cover red. I think the red against the brilliant black will be smokin :AR15firin

Thanks everyone,

The paint is Auto-Zone Dupont/Dupli-Color Spray paint in cans. $4.99 each can. I bought a can of grey primer, a can of Classic chrysler orange engine paint (heat resistant up to 500 degrees.) and a can of clear gloss. That is enough to do the job (multiple coats of color and clear)

I think red would be a fantastic color on silver as well, but I wanted a more "authentic" chrysler muscle car theme.

Can't wait to see all your covers. This is a very easy do-it-yourself mod that will leave you satisfied as a home garage mechanic.

SLK320,

I like it. So much so, that I copied what you did with some flavor from II Kings. Here is the "near" final results (I think I'd like to find the black lettering that II Kings did in Orange on the 5.7L V8).

i went out and bought the necessary paint from autozone today, and managed to remove the center cover and taped the HEMI letters on one side (i started to loose patience, lol).
boy let me tell ya taping those letters is a pain in the ass! can people please share the technique you used to make sure all the lines were strait and the orange wont bleed when i spray?
also how many coats of paint and clearcoat did you guys use? NR your FAQ was great, but i still have a couple questions so i dont ruin it, as i know some others on here have!

...oh, and while i was at is, i painted the backround of the '300 HEMI C' emblem i took off my trunk HEMI orange as well. check my thread in the picture forum....ill have a better one once its resized (thanks 300touringnproud :sly: )

-also does anyone know if i can use the same ceramic paint i used on the engine cover for my calipers, or should i get a real caliper paint kit?
