This morning I took my 300 into the dealer to get the brakes fixed. I also brought in my spare keyfob, which appeared to be dead. It turns out that it was working fine; the car no longer recognized it. I paid $167 to get it (or the car?) reprogrammed, and all is again fine. I am concerned about two things.

  1. Did I waste my money paying the dealer to do something I could have done myself for free?
  2. I have a Mopar Maxcare extended warranty, which according to my Googling this morning, covers replacement of up to 3 keyfobs. How is it that a living but no-longer-paired keyfob costs me $167, but a completely dead one is replaced under warranty?

Not sure about the other issue, but to program a key, you already have to have two keys that are programmed.
The remote portion of those keys does not have to work for the programming, they just have to be synced to the car.
I bought two blank keys on amazon and had the dealer program one, and I programmed the third myself, and buried it in the car as an emergency spare.

I've seen from other posts where the remote portion of spares can be lost, and just running thru the programming sequence again corrects it.

:rocketwho You was robbed! I just traded my '13 for a '16, only came with one fob, so I kept the second one from the '13. Local dealer charges $20.00 to program. Didn't take 5 minutes after getting started.

Lucky for you...everyone in my area charges no less than 100 for programming
