Here's a new one I couldn't find in any threads. It started about a week or so ago (1000 miles on the car, a C). I put my key in and started the car up and heard a loud "pop" noise. At first I though, crap, a speaker just blew. (I had this problem on a previous car and the noise was similar but nowhere near as loud). Turned the radio on, everything was working and sounding fine. Ok... chaulk it up to an oddity. Next morning, before I even start the car, literally just get in and close the door...POP! Now I'm really confused. Each day since then (about a week now), as long as the car sits for a while (overnight minimum) when I first start it that day, I hear the pop. It has happened backing out of my driveway, going a bit down the road turning, going a bit down the road just driving straight. It only happens once though. The best I can describe the problem is it sounds like a cross between a speakering popping and someone throwing a good sized rock at your windshield. It is VERY noticeable and loud. (It scared my wife considerably and I warned her about it prior to that!) It seems to be coming from the front passenger side of the car, possibly near/under the dash. And again, it only happens at or shortly after the first start of the car, either in the morning or afternoon. The only common issue is letting it sit at least overnight. ANY ideas/thoughts/help!!!??!?

Mine stopped after my first oil change I don't know if the dealer did something or the raising of the car on the lift relieved some stress in the dash area to stop it.

As a very good car audio installer (that's what my friends say), I believe that somewhere in your audio system is the problem, That poping noise you're discribing as being real loud can't be the dash because I have that windsheild/dash pop at least once per month and it's not that loud to scare anyone. Maybe the amp needs to be rewired. Take it to the dealer to get it fixed.

FYI, when I install a audio system, it always comes out perfect. I heard it off many of my other friends' audio system that they installed themselves.

Yeah, my car has the same problem.
Everytime I turn the key, my head "pops off" - go figure!

Would it still pop with the radio off though? And just once the first time I drive the car after it has sat for serveral hours?
Yes it will.

About 14 or 15 years ago I researched it and basically means bad wires. Go to your nearest car audio store and ask them, they should know. It's been to long for me to remember why. But before you go. Place your ear next to the speaker and cover up your other ear. If it comes from the speaker, then it's bad wires. Maybe somewhere in your audio system might have a ground.

My dealer stated they performed the TSB, but I am still having the popping. Anyone else continue to have the noise after the TSB was (supposedly) performed? I think I'll pop off the defroster cover next chance I get to verify.

When was that TSB Issued? anyone has the site that you can look up if there's any TSB linked to your VIN? I lost the bookmark. Thanks!
TSB's are in most cases not linked to VIN's the same way that recalls are, and in fact most TSB's are not even linked to VIN's but rather to a specific symptom or problem, and referenced by model year(s) and/or build dates.

TSB #: 23-018-05

Date: March 11, 2005

Subject: Pop/Snap Sound On Right Side Of Instrument Panel

Overview: This bulletin involves removing the right Instrument Panel (I/P) retainer to cowl plenum fastener.

Models: 2005 (LX) 300/Magnum

Symptom/Condition: Loud snap/pop sound on the right side of the I/P. The sound is typically heard within the first mile of driving after the vehicle has sat 4 hours or more. The sound is normally a single snap/pop that sounds like a stone hitting the windshield on the right side.

Repair procedure:

1. Use a fiber trim stick, such as special tool c-4755, to unclip the I/P defroster cover on the right side. The Magnum will also require the removal the right "A" pillar molding before the defroster cover can be unclipped.

2. With the right side of the defroster cover unclipped, lift the cover up to gain tool access to the right side I/P retainer to cowl plenum fastener. The fastener is forward on the retainer and to the right of the defroster opening.

3. Use a 7 mm flex socket to remove the right I/P retainer to cowl plenum fastener.

4. Install the I/P defrost cover and make sure the clips are fully engaged into the I/P retainer.

NOTE: When unclipping the defrost cover the clips may stay in the retainer. The clips must be reattached to the defrost cover tabs before installation of the cover.

5. Install the right "A" pillar molding (Magnum only).

Yeah, spoke a bit soon I guess. While the popping noise is no more, I now hear a very persistent rattle from the front passenger side of the dash like something (the dash itself?!?!?) is loose. And for good measure, the windshield wipers have also started to screech along the windshield even in thorough rain (and the car has 3000 miles so I doubt they are shot!!) Ugh...

While your driving around, try pushing down on the dash, about 3 or 4 inches from
the center of the dash, and about 4 inches up from the edge of the brushed trim
piece around the controls.

I have this same rattle, and I have found on mine that its something under the dash,
just off center, and just slightly up from the center controls trim piece upper edge.

I bet there is something in there that is loose, or rubbing. I bought myself a "fiber
trim set" from Eastwood that has 7 different trim sticks, and it should help in getting
the controls trim piece off.

Mine sounds like it's in the front passenger corner by the windshield. I cleared everything from the glove box to be sure, still there.... back to the dealer I guess. Maybe this time they will hear the friggin rattle in the sunroof that "couldn't be detected"... yeah, until I drove it off the lot from the service appointment and about 75% of the time since.... yeeeeeeeesh. I hate rattles.

Just out of curiousity, anyone else with this rattle (somewhere front/middle-right of the dash and NOT the popping noise)... did you have the TSB performed for the popping? Just curious if one may have lead to the other.
