Overheating

1752 Views 35 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  RamiroH0727
I have a 06 Chrysler 300 2.7L. My car keeps overheating. I replaced the fans and thermostat and it still over heats. What else should I check. Running out of ideas.

Thanks,
Ramiro

1. Is the water pump OK
2. Have you topped up the coolant? If so what anti freeze did you use?

...and do your fans come on as they should?

I believe the water pump is ok. I had replaced 2 years ago when I replaced the timing chain. Yes I have topped of the coolant. I just used universal coolant from our local parts store.

My old fans were not coming on at all. So I replaced them. I installed the new fans and now the fans turn on. I believe there coming on when there supposed to. One thing I noticed. Is that it takes along time for the temperature to get operating temperature.

I would be concerned at using a universal coolant. Chrysler specify HOAT (I think that's the same for your age car). If you're unlucky mixing coolants can make the cooling system "sludgy" which is not a good thing for the engine

I will look into the coolant. Never had a problem with the universal coolant. Maybe this time it's the problem . Would a plugged up heater core cause this issue also?

Yes if you mix the wrong stuff with HOAT you get a sort of gel-like mixture. If you're unfortunate enough for that to have happened to you then you need to flush out both the engine and the rad

Well I received back my car from the mechanic. He said he drove it around for about 10 minutes and it didn't over heat. He did state that when he would come to a complete stop the temp would go up slightly above normal operating temperature . When he would drove. The temp dropped back to normal. He thinks I could be having issues with my water pump. I drove it and turned on the the ac and it started to overheat right away. I could see the antifreeze starting to bubble up in over fill tank. Well I guess it's time to replace the water pump again

I stand to be corrected, but on the 5.7L... turning A/C on also turns the low speed fan on. It's easy enough to check that this happens as you don't need to have the car in gear. I've no experience with the 2.7, but it doesn't seem likely they'd be different... just a thought.

Do as DGO says. That will, at least, eliminate that as a potential problem. Personally, I've had DCX vehicles for about 19 years now and have never run anything other than Mopar HOAT coolant mixed 50/50 with distilled water. I won't even try any of the aftermarket HOAT coolants. I have also never had any problems with any of the cooling systems, except the cheap a$$ factory "stamped metal" thermostat housings leaking. Once I replaced them with Billet Technology ones, no issues at all....knock on wood.
If it was overheated it could have been damaged like headgasket blown or something. Will cause it to overheat again and again. Have your mechanic test the coolant for combustion glasses.

Sorry I have not followed up on my problem. Today I backwashed my radiator. Connected all the hoses back up and filled it up with Zerek G05 antifreeze. I kind of over filled the resivor with coolant. I let my car idle for almost 1 hour. The fans came on on low right around 210 to 212 degrees. The temp stayed around operating temp on the cluster. I took ot for a quick drive and I noticed that some of the coolant I over filled the resisivor went into the over fill tank. I noticed that the coolant in there was boiling a bit. But not in the main chamber of the coolant tank. So I be concerned that my car can over heat again

Thanks,
Ramiro

The reservoir and overflow should be filled to the fill mark. Don't be concerned about it boiling in the overflow, the overflow is open to atmosphere so it will boil while the coolant in the engine and radiator are under pressure. If you get boiling in the radiator that's a problem that means it's not holding pressure.

J1000 will it didn't take long today after to work for my car to start overheating. When I got home I plugged in the scanner and the coolant temp was at 233 degrees and climbing. So I turned off my car. Also I noticed today it's looks like there is some seepage of coolant around the resovivor. Maybe I have a slight Crack on it.

What did the coolant look like that came out... any globs, or much crud? Flushing the radiator was good, but did you flush the entire system? Again, I have no experience with the 2.7 but on the 5.7, it's capacity is about 3.5 gallons. Just popping the radiator petcock will allow about half of that to drain... which leaves half the old coolant in the system. There are ways to get it all out, but my preference is to keep filling with water... run up to temp...let cool & drain... repeat... again... and again. If you're in a warm climate, then you can do this over a week or two. If you've started with a 50/50 mix, then the first time you replace half with straight water the ratio reduces... after enough repetitions, you'll drain what looks like just water with a faint smell of anti freeze. Then put in the amount of HOAT your system calls for, then add water... or pre-mix if your inclined.

You mentioned the low speed fan coming on, but never the high speed. So hot as it's gotten, you should hear the fan on high. Heck, you got home and plugged the scanner in... did you hear the fans on high or were they still running on low?

Is you're A/C condenser clean? The air must pass thru it on the way to your radiator....
The seals between the fan housing and radiator, are they still there and if good shape?

Check and see if you've two fan relays... if so, and if they're the same, try switching them. If there's one for high and low... your high speed fan may still not be working.

Are you over heating on the highway, or is this local driving with your A/C on?

There definitely shouldn't be any boiling in the reservoir. The first thing to check in this situation is the pressure cap on the reservoir (which is pressurized, just like the rest of the cooling system). You can either replace it (a genuine Stant 10234 shouldn't cost you more than ten bucks) or get a pressure-testing tool to be sure it's holding as it should.

If the problem persists, I'd examine the reservoir carefully for cracks. It only takes a very small one to keep your cooling system from pressurizing properly, which will lower the boiling point of the coolant. The reservoir is a common failure point on first-gen cars and is easily replaced.

Grumpy1 no clumps or crud came out of the radiator. I did not flush the entire system. Just the radiator. I washed a ac condenser when I flushed my radiator. The high fans work. I heard the fans on high. Just when I happened to pull into my driveway at home. Thats why i grabbed the scanner to check coolant temp

CtCarl I just bought a new coolant cap. Hopefully that is the cause. If not I'll look at the reservoir carefully next

I think I might have a water pump issue. I'm starting to see puddles of coolant under my passenger front tire. Hopefully that's the cause of my overheating problems.
