Question about 2nd gear "lag"...

8576 Views 21 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  WhiteDiamond
When I take off, say, at 1/4 or 1/2 throttle, and the car goes from 1st to 2nd... once it hits second it feels normal, then for a second or two it seems to drop down lower in the rpm band, almost like the torque converter is locking up. What is this? Why is it setup this way? Is anyone else experiencing this? I thought I read about it somewhere but couldn't find it when searching.

No one has experienced this? Or is it normal? Bueler, Bueler....

yep sure is....# 18-031-05 ..after i got mine flashed i can tell the difference
go have this tsb done it should help..
Great, thanks! I'll see what the dealer says. Mine is an '06 Magnum SRT-8, can't remember the build date...

Does anyone have a website where I can bring this up and print it to bring it into the dealer? You know how they are!

I don't think he is referring to the WOT TSB you posted. He is stating at part throttle, 1/4 to 1/2 throttle, and not WOT. Our MSRT-8 does this as well and I believe it is slipping into 3rd gear. There is also a TON of timing pulled on each shift, even at light throttle, and you can really feel it as you get used to the car. We need somebody to come up with tuning ability for the PCM to pull all this torque managment crap out of there. The difference in our Hemi Ram with the Superchips flashpaq is incredible and really highlights the stuff in the SRT-8.

Yep, that's exactly what it is. It's hard for me to tell if it's bogging in 2nd or quickly shifting into 3rd and bogging.

When I had my '05 Supercharged Mustang GT reprogrammed from the Predator to the Superchips, it fixed all of these same issues. It even held gear longer even at just partial throttle: something I wish the SRT would do. Sometimes I'll turn a corner and when I come out of the corner slowly, it stays in 3rd gear at what seems to be around 12mph and slowly "bogs" its way up there. Not a big deal, but all stuff that could be fixed with a better tune, like Todd mentioned.

Well, if it works on the 6.1L as well, more to it. I tried it and it didn't do anything with ours, so maybe it helps others.....

The proceedure is the learn routine.

The Key trick with the Hemi truck is supposably something Dodge put in the PCM to tell it to change certain points(shift and redline, but it didn't do anything on our 2004....supposed to work on 2003s).

Todd
Yep, I tried this with my SRT-8 and it didn't work (disconnected the battery, throttle to floor, etc).

After checking further, it is definitely in 2nd gear at normal to light throttle that I get this "bog". It's almost as if once it goes into 2nd and hits, say, 2000rpm, it then feels like it drops to 1800rpm, then starts creeping back up in the rpm range.

Did anyone find the specific TSB for this or are the other TSB's only for the "shift issue"?

So far, this is the only tranny flash I have seen for the 6.1L drivetrain. I was told another tranny flash would be coming before the year end. I'm not convinced, however, that this is specifically a problem other than DCX programming the tranny to upshift quickly due to low end torque and MPG estimates. You and I must get our foot into it about the same amount once and while and just get this. I don't have this issue with less or more throttle application than you mention, but I still hate the torque modulation during the shift(engine falling flat.....).

Todd
Exactly. And once it's in 3rd at, say, 18mph, I sit there wondering to myself "why did it feel the need to shift into 3rd so soon?" or "why did it not shift into 2nd as I turned this corner at 12mph?". Just a couple more observations of how a "chip" or "program" could significantly help even normal speed driving. When I hammer it, there are NO problems though!
