Ok....last night Nicole and myself are driving through town after the movie. Just enjoying the evening with the sun roof opened. Its about 10:30pm. Next thing we know there is a black, Mazda RX8 pulled up next to us. He starts reving his motor and "bumping" his car forward. Well...of coarse Nicole says..."go ahead sweety....race him". And with that she blows the driver of the RX8 a good luck kiss. Leans over and gives me a big ol kiss. I turn off the ESP. I place left foot on brake. Right on the gas and bring it up to about 1200rpm and wait for the green light.
Green light!!! GO!!! I drop my foot from the brake and mash the gas. The big ol 22's dig in with just a small amount of spin and we pull away from the Mazda.
Nicole lets out a hooraaawww and then with about 50' ahead here comes the Mazda pulling hard. I'm in the middle of 2nd gear. The Mazda is beside us. The thing sounds like a rice rocket (bike)! 3rd gear he is ahead of us and still pulling strong. Here comes the next light about 1/16 of a mi ahead. By this time he is a good 75' in the leed. No way we are going to catch him.
Needless to say.....I am very let down. All this talk about how fast the C is and threads about "what have you blown away",etc. I have to give props to the RX8 and the driver. And the amazing sound the RX8 makes. Again...it sounded like a Ninja street bike.
Yeah....I know....I was racing a lighter, sports car, etc. But I figured the C would have given a better showing of itself.
And yes....before I get flamed for the partaking in the Fast and the Stupid street racing. It was late.....no traffic in either side of the streets. We could see for over mi. Etc. I do not normally do such things.
That being said....what a drag.... At least Nicole still loves me and our kids are healthy and beautiful. Time to call GSmotorsport.
<sigh>

Ooooh, that's bad. Especially after you blew him a kiss. I'm sure he went to bed thinking he was the shit...

...That is until he meets up in the future with a different 8 that he mistakes for a C.

well it's possible his RX8 was modded as well, I would imagine there are a lot of goodies available for that car; I saw a "mazdaspeed" Rx8 that was supercharged in one of the mags a while back..... was not in production yet but there could be aftermarket stuff for them.

I drove an RX8 back in September 2003....I was VERY IMPRESSED! It has no torque whatsoever but it rev's so smoothly right past the 9300 RPM redline that it wasn't even funny.... a blast to drive, and handles like it's on rails! I'm not sure it's weight but it's gotta be 1200 lbs or so lighter than a 300c.

Im suprised, those things are only 190whp. But he could of been heavily modded to beat you by that much.

he definatly had some goodies under the hood. ive taken on many STOCK rx8's and absolutly smoked them, even with my 22's on.
dont feel soo bad.....if his car sounded that nice then im sure he had some sort of turbo kit or something in there. those wankle engines are nice, but they dont have anything on the HEMI.

Yep, those things weigh about 3000lbs.

I could see him taking you stock if he has the 6speed or Shinka AT. They're 238HP. 100HP less but MORE than 1000lbs less. Even with mild mods it would wake up his car pretty good.

My uncle has one. Personally, I can't stand the lack of torque. I want power INSTANTLY. On a road course though I'll bet it's a blast.

I had an RX8 2 years ago and driven right will smoke many 300Cs, a 7000 rpm clutch drop and you hit 60 in 5.9 which will beat most Cs especially one running 22s. This RX8 may very well have been stock. If you miss the launch in an RX8 then you get smoked, it's 5-60 time is 7.5 due to an absence of torque. The C in various tests seems to be inconsistent, the first was 5.3 by C&D, all others came in at 5.7-6.3, the RX8 seems to run a consistent 5.8-6.1, who wins is all in the launch, handicapped with 22s there is no chance. Oh btw, my comments are in no way supportive of street racing, keep it on the track.

Non modded it would have to be the RX8 with the bigger engine and the manual shift - with a guy (or gal) who knows how to work it. That car has no torque though and I would think it should be a pretty close race. I think most 300Cs can do (test wise) under 6 seconds based on all the reading I have done and track results I have seen - of course with a driver that knows how to launch. Not implying you do not - your probably better than me. Not trying to be negative but those 22" can not help. One of the reasons I would not put them on my car.

had to have a turbo

They barely test at 6.o seconds to 60 (Maybe 5.9 with a good driver stock)(

I just got back from getting my tires rotated and told my story to a buddy at the shop. He knows the car. They sold him his wheels and tires. He claims the car is VERY moded with a turbo running high boost,no cat, etc. Talking with Nicole (the RX8 was in the right hand lane) who had her window down. She said the one shift we heard from him she could hear a "woosh" noise. Sounds like a bypass on the turbo. So who knows? I won't feel as bad if I can confirm that he indeed has a "built" car and not stock.
I can say this after reading other replys. That car could really rev. So the 9000+ rpm redline I can belive. I give it up when credit is due. The guy could drive. I have raced on the strip a little and done legit canyon racing, etc. He knew how to use his car.

The woosh noise would have been the blowoff valve. When you shift you will hear that blast of air or a whistle if they have that type of BOV

I always read the 0-60 times of various cars in the back of the car magazines - I then have a good idea of who I can blow away and who will blow me away - why bother with them?... If they look and sound stock or close to it, and they are in the same ballpark timewise, then it's a fun competition....

I don't really understand what you're trying to say- the rx-8 and the 300C DO have comparable 0-60 times, no one should be blowing anyone away (stock at least).

Also, you said you beat him off the line, but burned you on the high end. That sounds typical of a rotary, esp w/ a few breathing mods. Apparently the new renesis opens up pretty well in the upper rev range w/ a little work, it's just finding any torque (there isn't any) is impossible.

On the hand, i LOVE the sound of a rotary, although a big v8 would be a close second.

OK here are the C&D times.

300C 0-60 5.3 1/4 mile 13.90

RX8 0-60 5.9 1/4 mile 14.50

If both cars are stock, you should beat him easily. Also, I am not sure of the impact of 22" inch wheels. The inside diameter of the tire is irrelevant. What matters is the outside diameter of the tire. A taller tire has the same effect as a higher gear ( numerically lower). That is, the car won't accelerate as quicky. If you have 18" wheels with an outside tire diameter of 26" or 22" wheels with an outside tire diameter of 26", the effective gear ratio is the same. If the wheels are heavier than stock, they will have some impact due to having to accelerate more mass. If lighter, the opposite is true.

Therein lies the big difference really. 22" Wheels vs. 20" wheels with the same outside diameter and weight will perform the same if I'm not mistaken.

The optimal wheels would actually be more like 17's or 18's with a much smaller diameter. CCW specializes in lightweight performance oriented wheels and I believe 18's are the absolute biggest ones they make for this reason.

BigBamBoo-hoo? :)
Why would you feel different if it his car was modded vs. stock, and what do you need to confirm?? I think everyone who reads this knows it was not stock..who cares! You got owned thinking you had a faster car - a big 4 door with lots of power vs. a little sports car...AND, your gal blew a kiss to him!??! Dude, I'm surprised you actually posted the story!! :eek:uch:

What do you say to the guy in a new Corvette that gets smoked by a SRT8 he thinks was just some big ol' 4 door....he couldn't have know about the blower under the hood on that 6.1 liter monster...could he? :smoker:

I'm just glad your girl didn't jump out at the next light and get in his ride!! Now THAT would have been sad..(I bet that's what his version of this story says on the RX8 boards)LOL :nutkick:

The RX-8 was definitely modded.

at 1.3 liters, the rotary engine puts out about 238 Hp (In 6 speed manual) and almost no torque. Straight line, those things are ok, on turns, it could tear alot of cars twice as much a new a$$hole. I'm gonna bet anything that he had some kind of FI, along with the usual intake/headers/exhaust.

Cohiba you hit the nail on the head about the RX8 in turns. That was my experience when I test drove one... as I was leaving the dealership it accelerated good, but nothing earthshaking. It has no torque but you can rev it to the moon and it LOVES it... anyway the salesman said "do you want to drive it on the freeway or on a curvy road? "....... lol.... I told him I drove on the freeway to GET here..... :) . I think he quit after that ride. I'm an ok driver but then halfway thru the drive I pulled over and asked if my nephew could drive the rest of the way... he said "of course!"... well the kid in the back seat was not really my nephew, but a 21 year old friend who has driven lots of autocross races and is a really good driver... the previous week the dealership had declined to let him drive an RX8 cuz he's just a 'punk kid'.... so thats the only reason I was even there; I knew they'd let a 40 year old drive it...lol. Anyway the rest of the ride was a fun one for me and my 'nephew', not sure it was for the salesman though...That car handles like it's absolutely glued to the ground...no oversteer, no understeer...just goes exactly where you tell it to, exactly when you tell it to. I'll keep my 300C though :)

hello everyone  i just wanted to say again that this is such an awsome group of people! now as far as 5point7's comment and me (this is nicole in case you had not figured it out yet) blowing the diver of the rx-8 a kiss. stan and i have one of the best things in the world. what is that you ask? true love. based on trust, friendship, passion, and happiness in knowing we will always be together. it sounds like maybe your missing these things in your life or lacking in a trusting, loving, relationship. we were having fun. stan wanted to relate this story to the rest of the great people of this forum thinking others might get a laugh out of it. :silly: i am sorry to hear 5point7 that if you lost a stoplight race that your girl would leave you for another man. maybe you need to focus on your relationship and not on cars. bye, nicole. :newangel:
