Hello,
I was out looking around for more info on the StarScan, and ran across this link, hadn't seen anyone post it before so thought I would put it up. It looks to me that if you could get a copy of the OS you could run this in VMware and have your own diag tool, I think getting the new software images would be the hard part.

You could buy your own StarScan here: http://miller.spx.com/data/StarSCAN%20AM%20Flyer.pdf;)

Getting the OS would probably be hard, but that would only be the beginning. In addition to acquiring the initial image, you would need frequent updates as well. Even after getting a copy of the OS/App you would also need a CAN interface that used the exact same device driver and protocol specs that the StarScan used. The StarScan is using an embedded CAN interface that is tightly coupled to the OS. Although CAN is a standard for communication, current CAN interfaces all have their own method of wrapping the data packets based on their application layers. I've seen RS232, USB and PCI based CAN interfaces and they all have their own SDK's for developing apps.

I don't think it is feasible to make a usable StarScan even if you could get a copy of the OS.

Now, if want to "sniff" the CAN, log data or fire your own events based on data reported on the CAN, I think that is doable.

Good info

Thanks for the feedback, I'm looking at some of the different devices you mentioned now. I find this pretty interesting and worrisome at the same time. I can't imagine a tech at the dealer having any real understanding of what is going on. I bet if the Star Scan doesn't have a diag filter defined to indicate a specific problem, there will be a problem for a long time to come. Anyhow thanks for the info!

PS some of the sites I have been checking out.
