After replacing nearly all of the front suspension parts over the last few years, it seems that the main culprit causing the knocking was the sway bar bushes, having said that I did replace n/s/f bottom ball joint at the same time (base of strut) .
So save yourself some cash, if you have a knock, go for sway bar bushes first, it also firms up the suspension nicely.

Always check sway bar bushings first. They're always going to be the main reason for clunking.

After that, check your Sway Bar End Links. Those joints are usually the next to go. Other than that, the forward lower control arm Joint and Bushing, upper control arm joints are usually ready around that point as well.
